    Notes: We report the first direct measurement of the hyperfine structure of single NO2 molecular eigenstates in the 2.53 cm−1 region below dissociation threshold (D0), using the method of polarization quantum beat spectroscopy (QBS). The hyperfine interaction of these loosely bound states is substantially weaker (on the average by a factor of ∼5) than found at energies below 22 000 cm−1, but is similar on the average to that observed 50–150 cm−1 below threshold. The implications of our results regarding the participation of additional electronic states near D0 are discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Dandruff is a common problem in approximately 30% of the world's population. Reports in the literature regarding treatment of this condition with various antidandruff shampoos usually report the level of active ingredient within the formulation. However, we propose that a more important parameter relating to antidandruff efficacy is the amount of active ingredient delivered to the scalp from the shampoo. This report describes the results from two studies designed to investigate the relationship between the level of zinc pyrithione (ZnPTO) deposited onto the scalp and the resultant scalp condition. A double-blind randomized vehicle-controlled clinical study comparing three shampoos – a vehicle, a low-depositing ZnPTO shampoo and a high-depositing ZnPTO shampoo – was carried out in the U.K. with 53 panelists with dandruff or mild-to-moderate seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. Both shampoos containing ZnPTO were significantly superior in antidandruff efficacy to the vehicle. Furthermore, the high-depositing ZnPTO shampoo was significantly superior compared with the low-depositing ZnPTO shampoo in terms of both antidandruff efficacy and antimycotic activity. Antidandruff performance and antimycotic activity of ZnPTO-containing shampoos is highly dependent on the amount of active ingredient delivered to the scalp. Furthermore, careful manipulation of the formulation parameters of an antidandruff shampoo can result in enhanced levels of delivery of the active ingredient without having to increase the level of active ingredient within the formulation.

    Notes: The hardware necessary for the electro-optic study of conducting polyelectrolyte solutions is frequently not commercially available or financially practical. The designs of an electrical rectangular pulse switch and polarity-reversing relay switch capable of producing 3 kV 5 A direct current pulses lasting longer than 100 μs are presented. As an example of the operation of this equipment, the electric birefringence of an aqueous solution of the Pseudomonas bacteriophage Pf1 in tris/EDTA buffer is presented. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this study, we have utilized characterization methods to identify the nature of metal impurity precipitates in low performance regions of multicrystalline silicon solar cells. Specifically, we have utilized synchrotron-based x-ray fluorescence and x-ray absorption spectromicroscopy to study the elemental and chemical nature of these impurity precipitates, respectively. We have detected nanometer-scale precipitates of Fe, Cr, Ni, Cu, and Au in multicrystalline silicon materials from a variety of solar cell manufacturers. Additionally, we have obtained a direct correlation between the impurity precipitates and regions of low light-induced current, providing direct proof that metal impurities play a significant role in the performance of multicrystalline silicon solar cells. Furthermore, we have identified the chemical state of iron precipitates in the low-performance regions. These results indicate that the iron precipitates are in the form of oxide or silicate compound. These compounds are highly stable and cannot be removed with standard silicon processing, indicating remediation efforts via impurity removal need to be improved. Future improvements to multicrystalline silicon solar cell performance can be best obtained by inhibiting oxygen and metal impurity introduction as well as modifying thermal treatments during crystal growth to avoid oxide or silicate formation © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on the hyperfine structure of N=1, J=3/2 levels of 62 NO2 vibronic states in the 16 850–21 500 cm−1 region, as determined via quantum beat spectroscopy. The hyperfine structure of these levels of mixed A˜ 2B2/X˜ 2A1 electronic character is dominated by the X˜ 2A1 Fermi-contact interaction, and a decrease in the hyperfine splittings with increasing energy is revealed when our results are compared with previous studies in the 11 200–13 700 cm−1 region. This comparison also reveals the loss of a correlation between band intensity and Fermi-contact constant. A detailed comparison of our results with theoretical predictions for the 16 600–18 700 cm−1 region is presented. We find that vibrational averaging of the X˜ 2A1 Fermi-contact interaction is reflected in the hyperfine interaction of bands in this region, and should also be a factor in producing the small hyperfine splittings observed at energies near dissociation threshold. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The sign and magnitude of Landé gF factors for single NO2 rovibronic (J=3/2) eigenstates in the 15 cm−1 region below dissociation threshold (D0=25 128.57 cm−1) were investigated using Zeeman quantum-beat spectroscopy. The derived Landé gF factors exhibit pronounced fluctuations about an average much smaller than expected in the absence of rovibronic perturbations, which destroy the goodness of the N and K quantum numbers and the J=N+S coupling scheme. The F=J+I coupling scheme was found to be valid near D0 to within the uncertainty of our measurements, and the average Landé gF factors near dissociation threshold are in good agreement with those calculated under the assumption of complete rovibronic mixing. Our findings do not provide evidence for the participation of repulsive quartet states near dissociation threshold. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The dissolution of copper precipitates in Czochralski silicon has been studied with synchrotron-based x-ray fluorescence. Copper has been introduced and allowed to precipitate at oxygen precipitates and growth-related stacking faults. The dissolution of copper precipitates is monitored after low-temperature anneals. This study is designed to determine whether copper can be released from these precipitation sites at low temperatures such that contamination and subsequent device degradation of an integrated circuit device could occur. Our results demonstrate copper dissolution back into the silicon matrix at temperatures as low as 360 °C. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Results are reported demonstrating that radio-frequency (rf) plasma cleaning is an effective technique for mitigating microwave-pulse shortening (i.e., lengthening the pulse) in a multimegawatt, large-orbit, coaxial gyrotron. Cleaning plasmas were generated by 50 W of rf power at 13.56 MHz in nitrogen fill gas in the pressure range 15–25 mTorr. Improvements in the averaged microwave energy output of this high-power-microwave device ranged from 15% to 245% for different initial conditions and cleaning protocols. The mechanism for this improvement is believed to be rf plasma sputtering of excess water vapor from the cavity/waveguide and subsequent removal of the contaminant by cryogenic vacuum pumps. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The regulators of G protein signaling (RGS) are an extraordinary class of diverse multifunctional signaling proteins best known for their potent capacity to down-regulate the activity of Gα subunits at the plasma membrane. In certain circumstances, some RGS proteins undergo translocation to the nucleus or plasma membrane from the cytoplasm. Translocation demonstrates a potentially dynamic alternative mechanism for Gα subunit or effector regulation. The nuclear localization of the regulators of G protein signaling proteins further suggests these proteins possess even greater functional heterogeneity than that envisioned previously, as regulators of transcription and cell cycle control.

    Notes: Abstract: Members of the newly discovered regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) families of proteins have a common RGS domain. This RGS domain is necessary for conferring upon RGS proteins the capacity to regulate negatively a variety of Gα protein subunits. However, RGS proteins are more than simply negative regulators of signaling. RGS proteins can function as effector antagonists, and recent evidence suggests that RGS proteins can have positive effects on signaling as well. Many RGS proteins possess additional C- and N-terminal modular protein-binding domains and motifs. The presence of these additional modules within the RGS proteins provides for multiple novel regulatory interactions performed by these molecules. These regions are involved in conferring regulatory selectivity to specific Gα-coupled signaling pathways, enhancing the efficacy of the RGS domain, and the translocation or targeting of RGS proteins to intracellular membranes. In other instances, these domains are involved in cross-talk between different Gα-coupled signaling pathways and, in some cases, likely serve to integrate small GTPases with these G protein signaling pathways. This review discusses these C- and N-terminal domains and their roles in the biology of the brain-enriched RGS proteins. Methods that can be used to investigate the function of these domains are also discussed.
