Notes: Summary The spectrum of Na2 from 2600 Å to 2750 Å has been recorded in absorption in the second order of a 3.4 m Ebert spectrograph with a reciprocal dispersion of 2.6 Å/mm. The vibrational structure appears to the higher-energy side of theE-X system extending to about 2600 Å. This system is namedF-X system. The vibrational analysis is performed and the molecular constants are evaluated.

Notes: [Auszug] THE basal texts of the alchemical knowledge of the Middle Ages in Europe are the “Turba Philosophorum” and the “Tabula Chemica” of Senior Zadith, son of Hamuel; but although both of them are obviously derived from Arabic sources, the latter have not hitherto been traced. Some twenty-five years ...

Notes: Electroconvulsive therapy is usually accompanied by activation of the autonomic nervous system, which may be harmful in patients with cerebrovascular or ischaemic heart disease. We have compared this haemodynamic response in a series of 82 electroconvulsive treatments randomly assigned to receive either nitroglycerin 3 μg.kg−1, esmolol 2 mg.kg−1 or placebo. These drugs were given shortly after the suxamethonium and 2 min before the electroconvulsive therapy in all cases. Heart rate was significantly lower with esmolol 1 min after therapy as was blood pressure (systolic and diastolic). The pulse rate was higher following nitroglycerin than placebo, which in turn was higher than esmolol. The three groups did not differ with regard to seizure duration. The results demonstrate that esmolol is more effective than nitroglycerin in controlling the haemodynamic response to electroconvulsive therapy. With recent emphasis on stabilisation of heart rate in preference to blood pressure in at-risk cardiac patients, our study suggests that, in the doses selected, esmolol is preferred to nitroglycerin to control the heart rate response to electroconvulsive therapy.

Notes: Abstract PURPOSE: A study was conducted to compare the outcome of combined anorectal procedures involving lateral internal sphincterotomy with lateral internal sphincterotomy alone to determine if the former results in increased complications. METHODS: Complications and anal function of 57 patients who underwent lateral internal sphincterotomy for chronic anal fissure in conjunction with another anorectal procedure (combined group) between April 1989 and June 1992 were compared with 57 other age- and sex-matched patients who underwent lateral internal sphincterotomy alone (control group). RESULTS: There was no statistical difference in the incidence of incontinence in the combined group (8.7 percent) and the control group (7 percent). None of the cases in either group had permanent incontinence. There were also no statistical differences in the incidence of postoperative bleeding, pruritus ani, mucus discharge, abscess formation, fistulation, and rates of fissure recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Additional anorectal procedures performed at the same time as internal sphincterotomy do not increase the incidence of postoperative complications.

Notes: Abstract The ultraviolet spectra of Na2 and K2 molecules have been investigated. These studies were made in absorption in the second order of a 3.4 m Ebert Spectrograph with a reciprocal dispersion of 2.6 Å/mm. A number of new bands in the spectra of both the molecules not previously reported have been observed. Computer methods have been used to calculate the term values and to evaluate molecular constants.

Notes: Abstract The absorption spectra of Bi2 molecule has been obtained in the region 3166–3380 Å in the second order of a 3.4 m Ebert Spectrograph with a reciprocal dispersion of 2.6 Å/mm. The bands obtained are found to belong to two new systems named G-X and J-X. Vibrational analysis is performed and computer methods have been used to determine the molecular constants.

Notes: A simple method for the determination of the composition of compounds and alloys by using the data for chemical shifts of x-ray absorption edges is suggested. It is found that the calculated compositions of compounds are in good agreement with standard composition values.
