Notes: A detection system for conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy is described. A chevron microchannel plate assembly attached to a two-stage electrostatic lens is used to preferentially detect electrons with energies ≤15 eV. Mössbauer spectra collected with these electrons can provide information about a variety of solid-state surface phenomena.

Notes: A method of obtaining absolute, direct measurements of the spatial and spectral characteristics of bremsstrahlung is discussed. This technique, called x-ray activation of nuclei (XAN) is based on the use of well-known photonuclear reactions which populate long-lived nuclear isomers. These populations sample incident photon continua at discrete excitation energies and effectively store this information for convenient retrieval following the irradiation of gram-sized targets. Recently a series of experiments has been conducted which has significantly expanded the available data for the photoexcitation of a wide range of isomers at higher energies. Thus it has become feasible to extend the use of XAN to energies approaching 4 MeV. The utility of this technique is demonstrated by the characterization of bremsstrahlung from the newly installed research linac at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Notes: A segmented disk electrode is described that produces and controls both relative drift parallel to the magnetic field and localized flow perpendicular to the magnetic field in a Q machine plasma. Measurements of the electron drift velocity vd with respect to the ions, and the electric field E for many bias-voltage combinations are used to demonstrate the controllability of the ratio vE/vd, where vE=E×B/B2, in a narrow channel between the regions that magnetically map to the segments. Radial electric fields of magnitudes ranging from 0 to ±3 V/cm localized within a current channel with parallel electron drift velocities up to half the electron thermal velocity have been produced with the segmented disk electrode.

Notes: A contamination-free Langmuir probe of novel design is described. Surface contaminants, which lead to erroneous evaluation of plasma parameters by distortion of the probe's current-voltage characteristic, are removed by the indirect heating of the probe tip with separate heating elements running parallel to the probe wire in multibore alumina tubing. This configuration minimizes magnetic field perturbations, while maintaining the compact profile and construction ease of an unheated probe. The design and operating characteristics of such a probe are reported. Temperatures at the probe tip, as measured by a subminiature thermocouple, can exceed 500 °C. Experiments determining the effect of probe temperature, Tprobe, on the characteristic have been performed in a Q-machine plasma (Ti≈Te≈0.2 eV). We find that for Tprobe〈250 °C, the measured electron temperature is up to several times too large, indicating the presence of a contamination layer. This contamination layer is removed for Tprobe ≥300 °C, and accurate electron temperatures are recovered.

Notes: The Mössbauer effect was used to investigate films of nanophase diamond (NPD) implanted with isotopically pure 57Fe at a dose of 5×1016 atoms/cm2 and an energy of 20 keV. When defects and voids created by the implantation were repaired with an overcoating layer of NPD, the recoil-free fraction at room temperature for these samples was found to be fdia=0.94±0.06 with a corresponding Debye temperature of 1140 K. This relatively high value for f makes NPD films a promising host matrix for microgram quantities of Mössbauer isotopes.

Notes: Two recently developed probabilistic multidimensional models for analyzing pairwise choice data are introduced, discussed in terms of their differential properties, and extended in several ways. The first one, the wandering vector model, was originally suggested by Carroll [12] and extended by De Soete and Carroll [30]. The second model, called the wandering ideal point model, is a more recently proposed [32] unfolding analog of the wandering vector model. A general maximum likelihood estimation method for fitting the various models described is mentioned, as well as a statistical test for assessing the goodness of fit. Finally, an application of the models is provided concerning consumer choice for some 14 brands of over-the-counter analgesics to illustrate how such models can be gainfully utilized for marketing decision making concerning product positioning.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the first general large-signal dynamic multiple-mode laser model that incorporates all the main mechanisms known to influence the dynamic behaviour of DFB laser structures with the exception of thermal effects: longitudinal mode spatial hole burning, carrier transport effects, nonlinear gain, and laser and submount parasitics. The time evolution of the output power and wavelength of all modes is predicted, and full spectra can be plotted as a function of time. The model has been extended to include an approximation to the effects of propagation down dispersive fibre, thereby allowing the simulation of filtered received eye diagrams. Detailed comparison of the model with the experimental performance of 2×λ/8 DFB lasers has shown good agreement, allowing the performance to be optimized, particularly with respect to longitudinal hole burning and carrier transport. The model is also applied to gain-switched operation of 2×λ/8 DFB structures, fast pulsing of three-section λ/4 DFB lasers, and the dynamic behaviour of complex coupling coefficient DFB laser structures.
