Notes: Abstract Objective: The results of Prescription-Event Monitoring (PEM) from over 13 000 patients receiving cisapride are compared with safety data from a large-scale clinical study involving nearly 10 000 patients. Results: The clinical study population showed a significantly younger age profile than the PEM population and excluded patients with serious disease; however, both studies showed similar patterns of adverse events. The most common adverse events reported in association with cisapride in both studies were diarrhoea, headache, abdominal pain, constipation and nausea. Some of these may be attributed to the underlying condition rather than the action of the drug. Prompting patients about adverse events during a clinical trial assessment appeared to increase the reporting of some conditions: for example, diarrhoea was reported more frequently in the clinical trial than in the PEM study. Conclusion: Both studies showed cisapride to be generally safe and well tolerated.

Notes: Abstract We analyze the thermodynamics of systems which have entropy functions of the type S(m) = amβ + b, where m is an extensive variable and a, b, and β are constants. Such functions apply to dilatonic black holes whose mass is m. This analysis continues our earlier treatment of the general classification of the thermodynamics of systems by whether they exhibit entropy functions which may or may not be either superadditive, homogeneous or concave in the extensive variables on which the entropy depends. This leads to a classification into 8 types of thermodynamics (with several subtypes). We show that only five of these are available for systems having the entropy given above, and these are in fact realized if the constants are given appropriate values.

Notes: Abstract Double electron capture from He, H2, Ar, Xe atoms into 120 keV O6+ and from He into 80 keV C4+ ions is studied by 0°-Auger electron spectroscopy. Pronounced intensities of Coster-Kronig (L 1−L 23 n,n=5...14) decay lines indicate strong evidence for electron-electron interactions in a one-step two-electron transfer process. Lines from successive capture in two steps during a single collision populating quantum numbersn, n′ according to a classical barrier model are of comparable intensity. Predictions of final state populations from barrier model and Landau-Zener description are compared with experimental results.

Notes: Abstract Argon and iodine recoil ions were produced by a 2 GeV U75+ beam and total one electron capture cross sections are measured for 198 eV/q Ar q+ (4≦q≦15) and I q+ (5≦q≦27 on He andH 2. The cross section can be approximately reproduced by 1/2 πR 2 according to the classical barrier model. Theq-dependences exhibit significant fluctuations even for high charge states.
