Abstract Heterodyne holographic interferometry was used for end-on investigation of a He-Ne laser discharge. By tuning an actively stabilized dye laser over the 633 nm neon atomic line the phaseshift was obtained as function of frequency, thus enabling the determination of spatially resolved population inversion.
