Notes:
Abstract The influence of experimentally induced hypoxemia on free fatty acids in the plasma, on the blood level of cortisol, and on circulation was investigated in 26 healthy test persons. In all cases a significant increase of free fatty acids, pulse rate, and amplitude of blood pressure could be demonstrated. No enhanced liberation of cortisol was observed. The results support the hypothesis that acute hypoxemia causes an increase in the activity of the sympathetic nervous system in man.
