Notes: Abstract Spin waves which are characteristic of periodic structures of thin ferromagnetic Co films alternating with nonmagnetic Nb films have been investigated by means of Brillouin light scattering. The dependence of the magnon frequencies on the magnetic inplane field and on the wave-vector was measured for several samples with different numbers and thicknesses of the layers. The experimental data are in good agreement with a theory of magnetostatic surface spin waves in such media elaborated by Grünberg and Mika. The amplitudes of the transverse magnetization in the different layers of the stack have been calculated. The highest frequency branch resembles the Damon-Eshbach surface magnon. With decreasing frequency the branches acquire volume mode character. In addition, a number of phonon branches has been observed which are interpreted as plate modes of the combined Co-Nb layer on the Si substrate.

Notes: Abstract The spectrum of magnetostatic surface spin waves of a stack of magnetic and nonmagnetic layers is investigated theoretically. The calculation treats a very general case: each layer is allowed to be of different thickness, magnetization and magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Some interesting spezial cases are discussed in detail.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The left internal mammary artery bypass (LIMAB) to the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) was wrapped using PRECLUDE® IMA Sleeve (PIMAS) in order to prevent an injury during a reoperation. Objective of the prospective study was to evaluate the early and midterm results as well as the meaningfulness of the spiral-computed tomographic angiography (SCTA) to determine the localization and the patency of the LIMAB. Within 18 months the LIMAB to the LAD was coated using PIMAS on 75 patients (69 men and 6 women) mean age 55 years. The early lethality was 2.6% and was not caused by the usage of the PIMAS. A perioperative myocardial infarction occured in 2 cases (2.6%) and was localized outside the LIMAB-supply area. Wound infections did not occur. A follow-up could be performed on all patients 6 months post-operatively. The SCTA was performed in all patients in order to evaluate the LIMAB and the PIMAS. The localization and the detailed description of the PIMAS was possible in all cases without any difficulty. With 4 patients (5.3%) an occlusion of the LIMAB was suspected. Two of these occlusions were confirmed by slective angiography. Therefore was the positive predictive value 50% (2 non-patent grafts as closed diagnosed, 2 patent grafts as closed diagnosed). The negative predictive value was 100% (70 patent grafts as open diagnosed). The wrapping of the LIMAB using a PIMAS to prevent injury of the graft during a re-operation does not increase the lethality and morbidity following myocardial revascularization. The depiction of the wrapped LIMAB using a SCTA permits the reliable evaluation of the bypass patency as well as its localization and thus supplies important information for preparing the strategy in case of re-operation.

Notes: We present a magnetic sensor based on the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect, which can be used as a contactless potentiometer. The sensor consists of a novel GMR sensor scheme with an artificial antiferromagnetic subsystem. The sensor gives a sinusoidal signal in dependence on the direction of a rotating external magnetic field Hrot. With two sensors in a planar setup, the whole 360° angle range can easily be covered. The amplitude ΔR/R of the signal is about 5%. The signal amplitude runs through a very flat maximum and changes only by 5% within a field range of about 4.4–27.2 kA/m. This large field range, the magnetic window (Hw), is the main advantage of this sensor compared to other magnetic sensor physical principles for contactless potentiometers. Therefore, large mounting tolerances and variations in the field strength of the rotating permanent magnet can be accepted. The temperature dependence of the sensor is linear both for the ground resistance (R0) and the signal amplitude (ΔR), allowing simple and effective electronic temperature compensation. The sensor can be operated up to 150 °C. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
