Notes: Abstract Twelve poor sleepers of mean age 52 years performed 2 h of laboratory tests three times on 1 day during each week of nightly intake of loprazolam 0.5 mg, loprazolam 1 mg, triazolam 0.5 mg, or continued placebos. Only in the mornings did loprazolam 1 mg cause impairment in manual dexterity and card-sorting, and triazolam 0.5 mg in manual dexterity. Using difference from baseline, withdrawal of either drug after 3 weeks was associated with poorer subjective quality of sleep than following continuing placebos. The rate of spontaneous complaints (including accidents) associated with the drugs was as informative as formal testing.

Notes: Summary In a representative survey of 1000 elderly men and women aged over 65 years living in their own homes, assessments have been made of flexibility measured as range of shoulder abduction in addition to health status, psychological well-being and reported customary activity. The results for shoulder abduction were approximately normally distributed and the mean values (±1 standard deviation) were as follows: — in men aged 65–74 years, 129 (±14)° and aged over 74 years, 121 (±19)°; in women aged 65–74 years, 124 (±19)° and aged over 74 years, 114 (±22)°. These mean values are about 30° less than those accepted for younger subjects. Nearly half the distribution falls below the accepted threshold level of 120° for adequate function. There were significant effects of sex and age (P〈0.001); women had poorer flexibility and the reduction with age amounted to 10° per decade. Multiple regression analysis showed that the effect of age was accounted for in part by health, strength and customary use. The effects of use were most marked in those with some disability. This suggests that maintained or increased use could offset some of the age-related loss of the range of shoulder movement.

Notes: An implicit-explicit procedure for the solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured triangular and tetrahedral meshes is outlined. A procedure for constructing continuous lines, made up of edges in the mesh, is employed and the implicit equation system is solved via line relaxation. The problem of generating, and adapting, unstructured meshes for viscous flow simulations is addressed. A number of examples are included which demonstrate the numerical performance of the proposed procedures.

Notes: A method of generating general tetrahedral meshes suitable for use in viscous flow simulations is proposed. The approach which is followed consists of the initial generation of a number of unstructured layers of highly stretched elements, in the vicinity of solid walls, followed by the discretisation of the remainder of the domain, by a standard advancing front procedure. The numerical performance of the proposed methodology is demonstrated by the generation of meshes suitable for viscous flow analysis over a number of three-dimensional aerodynamic configurations of current practical interest.
