    Notes: Abstract Physiological studies were carried out in the frog (Rana pipiens pipiens) eighth nerve to determine: (i) whether the modulation rate or the silent gap was the salient feature that set the upper limit of time-locking to pulsed amplitude-modulated (PAM) stimuli, (ii) the gap detection capacity of individual eighth nerve fibers. Time-locked responses of 79 eighth nerve fibers to PAM stimuli (at the fiber's characteristic frequency) showed that the synchronization coefficient was a low-pass function of the modulation rate. In response to PAM stimuli having different pulse durations, a fiber gave rise to non-overlapping modulation transfer functions. The upper cut-off frequency of time locking was higher when tonepulses in PAM stimuli had shorter duration. The fact that the cut-off frequency was different for the different PAM series suggested that the AM rate was neither the sole, nor the main, determinant for the decay in time-locking at high AM rates. Gap detection capacity was determined for 69 eighth nerve fibers by assessing fiber's spiking activities to paired tone-pulses during an OFF-window and an ON-window. It was found that the minimum detectable gap of eighth nerve fibers ranged from 0.5 to 10 ms with an average of 1.23–2.16 ms depending on the duration of paired tone pulses. For each fiber, the minimum detectable gap was longer when the duration of tone pulses comprising the twin-pulse stimuli was more than four times longer. When the synchronization coefficient was plotted against the silent gap between tones pulses in the PAM stimuli, the gap response functions of a fiber as derived from multiple PAM series were equivalent to gap response functions deriving from twin-pulse series suggesting that it was the silent gap which primarily determined the upper limit of time-locking to PAM stimuli.

    Notes: Abstract  Technetium Tc-99m disofenin cholescintigraphy (CS) and ultrasonography (US) are two major clinical methods used in differentiating biliary atresia (BA) from neonatal jaundice. To compare the diagnostic utility of these two modalities, 66 patients with neonatal cholestasis (15 BA, 3 choledochal cyst (CC), 32 neonatal hepatitis, 13 prolonged jaundice, 2 total parenteral nutrition, and 1 sepsis) underwent Tc-99m disofenin CS and US. The diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of CS in differentiating BA from other forms of neonatal jaundice was 100%, 87.5%, and 90.5%, respectively, and for US 86.7%, 77.1%, and 79.4%, respectively. Tc-99m disofenin CS after premedication with phenobarbital and cholestyramine is a convenient and reliable method of differentiating BA from neonatal hepatitis, with a diagnostic accuracy superior to that of US. However, US is the initial imaging procedure of choice in patients presenting with jaundice to rule out anatomic anomalies such as CC.

    Notes: In this study, Multimode boiling on a straight pin is theoretically investigated. Axial steady-state temperature distributions along the fin are numerically evaluated, as well as their linear stability characteristics. When film and transition boiling coexist on the fin surface, or only the transition boiling covers the entire fin, the operation remains stable only if the fin length is less than some critical value. When transition and nucleate boiling coexist on a fin, or the fin is in the three-mode boiling (film + transition + nucleate boiling), the entry of nucleate boiling at the fin tip stabilizes the boiling process. This study on base heat flow and fin efficiency with the stability criteria also suggests a new fin design methodology.

    Notes: A thermal continuous parametric pump for separating multicomponent mixtures was experimentally investigated using the model system tolueneaniline-n-heptane on silica gel adsorbent. A simple method for predicting separations is presented and is found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. The method, based on an equilibrium theory, invokes the assumption that a multicomponent mixture contains a series of pseudo binary systems. Each binary system consists of one of the solutes as one component and the common inert solvent as the other component.

    Notes: Changes in the rheological properties of chitosan solutions with pH, ionic strength, and type of anion were studied. Between pH 2.0 and 5.0, apparent viscosities increased with the decrease of pH in chitosan-organic acid solutions, while in chitosan-HCl solutions they behaved oppositely. In chitosan-NaOH solutions, they decreased with the increase of pH between pH 5.0 and 6.0, then increased as pH further increased to pH 6.0-6.4. The difference may be due to different interactions of counterions with macroions and also the third electroviscous effect. Relative viscosity increased with a decrease in chitosan concentrations at concentrations below 1.5 × 10-3 M. Intrinsic viscosities changed with media pH and ionic strength.
