Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary Acute haemorrhagic lesions develop in a few hours and, depending on the stressors involved, may lead to gastrointestinal bleeding. In experiments on rats and guinea-pigs, mucosal lesions and changes in tissue histamine metabolism were measured during cold and restraint stresses, and the influence of antihistaminic drugs was investigated. The development of mucosal lesions was accompanied by a parallel increase in the histamine and mast cell content of mucosal tissue. Pre-treatment with a combination of H1- and HZ-antagonists significantly reduced the development of haemorrhagic stress lesions.
