Notes: Abstract New results on the192Hg superdeformed band have been obtained with EUROGAM. The experiment has been performed with the160Gd(36S,4n) reaction at 159 MeV. Above 800 keV the γ-ray energies differ from the previously published ones. Thus the rise of the dynamical moment of inertia $$\mathfrak{F}^{(2)} $$ above ħω=0.4 MeV is no longer observed. This is in better agreement with recent cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations.

Notes: Abstract Recent data from the EUROGAM array have revealed the population of the yrast superdeformed (SD) band of192Hg in the α4n exit channel of the16O+184W reaction at 113 MeV beam energy. The nucleus assignment was made on the basis of the SD band transition energies, and the observation of characteristic X-rays and lowlying yrast γ-transition of192Hg in coincidence with the SD band γ-rays. Both the feeding and decay-out patterns of the observed SD band have been found similar to the ones previously measured in the (36S,4n) reaction.

Notes: Abstract High-spin states in187Au have been populated in the172Yb(19F, 4n) reaction and studied with in-beam spectroscopic techniques using the “Château de Cristal” 4π-multidetector array. A comprehensive level scheme of187Au has been established. Experimental band crossing frequencies and gains in alignment were deduced. Shape coexistence in187Au, well established at low spin, is found to survive up to spin 57/2, and manifests itself through well separated oblate and prolate structures.

Notes: Abstract Excited states of185Hg have been investigated via the161Dy(28Si, 4n) reaction at 145 MeV. In-beamγ-ray spectroscopic studies have been performed with the “Château de Cristal” 4π-multidetector array. A level scheme of185Hg has been established. Shape coexistence, still present in185Hg like in the neighbouring Hg isotopes, manifests itself through a weakly populated decoupled band built on the 13/2+ isomer and three strongly-coupled bands built on the prolate 1/2− [521], 7/2− [514], and 9/2+ [624] Nilsson states.

Notes: A simple adaptive control algorithm, for which theoretical stability and convergence properties had been previously demonstrated, has been successfully implemented on a biomethanation pilot reactor. The methane digester, operated in the CSTR mode was submitted to a shock load, and successfully computer controlled during the subsequent transitory state.

Notes: It is shown that, in a mixed culture, under realistic assumptions, the optimal temperature profile maximizing the final biomass production under the constraint of the final relative proportions of the two populations is constant. This result is illustrated with a simulation experiment on a lactic fermentation model.

Notes: Introductory investigations performed in order to make quantitative electron-probe microanalysis of very light elements such as boron, carbon, nitrogen or oxygen possible are described. The practical problems encountered in this kind of work are discussed in detail and, where possible, solutions are proposed. It is shown that with very light elements such as carbon it is no longer permitted to measure x-ray intensities at the position of the maximum of the emission peak as the shape of the carbon Kα peak is subject to strong alterations, depending on the type of chemical bond involved. As a consequence, integral measurements have to be performed and it is shown that errors of 30-50% can easily be made if this is neglected. The lengthy procedures, connected with integral intensity measurements, can be shortened considerably by the introduction of area/peak factors, which, by definition, represent the ratio between the correct area (integral) and the peak intensity ratio. The accurate determination of such factors for 13 binary carbides is described. This set of factors will permit future measurements simply on the peak; multiplication of the peak intensity ratio by the appropriate area/peak factors will then yield the correct integral intensity ratios.

Notes: A computer program based on the use of Gaussian expressions for the x-ray distribution with depth [φ(ρz)curves] was tested on its usefulness for quantitative electron probe microanalysis. As the good results originally claimed for a similar program could not be reproduced initially, it was subjected to a detailed analysis. As a result, some modifications in the approach are proposed. Apart from increasing the speed of calculation considerably, the modified expressions provide a better insight into the delicate balance which has to exit between the relevant quantities involved. After a new optimization process the modified program was tested on about 450 published microanalyses. The results show that the φ(ρz) approach is indeed very promising as a narrow histogram with an r. m. s. value of 5. 4% could be produced. Finally, some suggestions are made for future improvements.

Notes: The performances of four current matrix correction programs have been tested on a data file of measurements on 13 binary carbides between 4 and 30 kV. Both the metal lines as well as the carbon Kα line have been measured, which resulted in 145 k ratios for the metals (relative to elemental standards) and 117 integral k ratios for carbon Kα (relative to Fe3C).Evidence is presented that the existing sets of mass absorption coefficients for carbon Kα radiation are perhaps not fully consistent and a new set is therefore proposed, which is in better agreement with the experimental results. Finally, it is shown that the modified Gaussian φ(ρz) approach, when used in conjunction with the new set of mass absorption coefficients, leads to unexpectedly good results, with a relative root-mean-square value of 3.7%. This demonstrates that even for carbon very good accuracy can be obtained, provided that proper care is exercised in the measurements and the proper procedures are followed.
