    Notizen: Transient heat transfer in a mechanically agitated vessel is studied in the case of an anchor and an helical ribbon impeller using Newtonian and shear thinning fluids. Temperature stratification is found more pronounced with the anchor, making this impeller clearly inadequate for heat transfer. The impact of natural convection is evaluated first using the classical Gr/Re2 ratio. It is shown that the use of this criterion in viscous mixing is somewhat misleading. A new Grashof number is then proposed to assess the significance of the viscous and buoyancy effects in non-isothermal, non-Newtonian mixing applications. It is shown that the interpretation of this new number is strongly related to the concept of process viscosity.

    Notizen: The bulk polymerization of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadene with tolylene diisocyanate has been studied in uncatalyzed isothermal reactions. The conversion in urethane was monitored by 13C-NMR spectroscopy of the C=O function at level up to 70%. Effects of reagents ratio and temperature were investigated. The experimental data were modeled by a set of two competitive second-order reactions to account for the difference in reactivity of o-NCO and p-NCO groups of tolylene 2,4 diisocyanate. The apparent kinetic constants calculated appeared to be statistically higher than previous results found in literature from work in aromatic solvents. Deviations from second-order law were observed during the last stage of polymerization. Activation energies were estimated at 12.3 kJ. mol-1 and 42.8 kJ. mol-1 for the p-NCO and o-NCO groups, respectively. The difference in their reactivity tended to decrease as temperature of reaction was increased. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: A two dimensional finite element model for the simulation of the advancing front in reaction injection molding (RIM) is presented. The model is based on the solution of the full Navier-Stokes equation for the computation of the velocity and pressure. The arbitrary Lagrange-Euler method is used for the moving front. The method of characteristics is used for the solution of the mass-and energy equations. An automatic remeshing algorithm is used to prevent element distortion and to optimize element size and number. Numerical results are presented for flow into a complex domain in order to illustrate the versatility of the method.

    Notizen: The metering operation in the transfer-roll coating process is crucial for achieving a good uniformity and suitable thickness of the coating film. Experimental results carried out on a laboratory coater are reported. This coater mimics industrial flow conditions: it has a transfer roll and a metering-rod diameter similar to those found on a pilot coater, it operates at commercial speed, and the cover of the transfer roll is deformable. The experimental apparatus is described first. Then, a video analysis of the rib pattern is presented. Some interesting features are shown, in particular the existence of an inertia regime at high speed. The nip flow hydrodynamics are investigated using measurements of the pressure profile. It is shown that the film stability is strongly linked to the flow at the exit of the nip. The analysis of the maximum pressure in the nip, for various fluid viscosities and operating parameters, is represented using a master curve.

    Notizen: A finite element analysis was carried out to study the mixing patterns of a viscous Newtonian fluid into a stirred tank. A helical ribbon screw impeller (HRS) was used as the mixing device. The numerical simulation involved the full three-dimensional resolution of the equations of change governing the flow in the tank. The circulation time and the torque were determined and compared with experimental data. A good agreement was found, showing the usefulness of the numerical approach for design purposes.

    Notizen: Research has been carried out on the use of NCS (Network Computing System) to distribute the processing of a finite element application to multiple computers at once. Coarse-grained parallelism of specific routines on loosely coupled CPUs has been implemented and tested. In a step-by-step fashion, the method of using NCS to convert finite element software POLY2D is explained for its application in parallel computing resources throughout a network. For the modeling of a simple conductive heat transfer problem, the distributed version of POLY2D on a homogeneous token ring network of nine Apollo workstations is used. Some timings given are compared to those obtained from a standard nondistributed simulation.

    Notizen: A new finite element model named Corrected Slice Method (CSM) has been developed to cope with three-dimensional vacuum cooling calibrator problems. Such problems appear whenever the cooling channel lay-out comprises transverse channels in the calibrator. The CSM is an extension of the 2D approach (8), which takes into account the axial heat fluxes within the calibrator. The proposed model was validated by comparing the numerical results obtained on a test problem with a rigorous finite element approach. Moreover, a real complex profile-calibrator system was simulated in order to illustrate the full performance of the porposed method.

    Notizen: A computer model has been developed to simulate the behavior of molten polymer in the melt conveying zone of extruders. This model, based on a hybrid finite difference/finite element resolution of the equations of change governing momentum and heat transfer, allows the prediction of the pressure profile while accounting for wall end effects as well as the solid bed velocity. Simulation results are compared with analytical and finite difference method results found in the literature. A fairly good agreement is obtained in the case of low density polyethylene. Numerical tests are also carried out with rigid poly(vinyl chloride) compound used for window profile extrusion. The good agreement found between the predictions and experimental measurements obtained on an industrial extruder confirms the performance of the proposed model.

    Notizen: Lubrication theory has been applied to solve flow problems in profile extrusion dies without flow separations, for Newtonian and power law type fluids. The method is based on velocity calculation within cross sections perpendicular to the flow. Pressure drop can also be obtained from a macroscopic balance, if the flow rate is known. Comparison of pressure drops in 2-D and 3-D geometries has been made with numerical simulation obtained by a finite element method. Results show a good accuracy of the proposed method.
