Notes: Abstract A rare (arteriolo-)capillomedullary venous anomaly of the cerebellum was examined with CT, MRI, and angiography. Unlike the usual venous angioma, this case had such extraordinary features as: infratentorial location, involvement of the whole left cerebellum, an arteriolocapillary component and a history of progressive vomiting and chronic constipation in a 7-year-old boy. CT and MRI were consistent with an extensive vascular malformation, but the actual diagnosis was reached by angiography.

Notes: Abstract Divalent cations play an important role in the functions of biomembranes. This review deals with three topics: (1) Mg2+-mediated change in physical state of phospholipid induces conformation and activity change of reconstituted mitochondrial H+-ATPase, (2) a proper transmembrane Ca2+ gradient is essential for the higher enzymatic activity of adenylate cyclase, and (3) role of transmembrane Ca2+ gradient in the modulation of reconstituted sarcoplasmic reticulm Ca2+-ATPase activity.

Notes: A free radical copolymerization model is proposed for simulating the reaction rates and conversions of styrene monomer and unsaturated polyester resins during curing. This model is based on film theory in which the rate constants reflect both reaction and diffusion resistances. Differential scanning calorimetry in combination with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is used to measure the overall and individual reactivities of reacting species. Model parameters are determined from experimental data. The applicability of this model is demonstrated in a cure simulation.

Notes: Yeast nucleoproteins were chemically phosphorylated with phosphorus oxychloride (POCL3). Studies using 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, stability to pH and lysine estimation all indicated that the ∊-amino group of lysine was the principal functional group phosphorylated. Phosphorylation of ca. 30% of the lysine residues resulted in removal of more than 85% of contaminant ribonucleic acid from protein precipitated at pH 4.2. Phosphorylation did not alter the amino acid composition of yeast proteins and was reversible under acidic conditions. Based on the data, a method for the preparation of phosphorylated yeast protein with low levels of nucleic acid is proposed.

Notes: A recent design procedure for perforated plate extraction columns requires extension to include jetting conditions at each perforation. For this purpose, correlations are obtained for jet length, jet contraction, drop size, and mass transfer coefficients in disperse phase controlled liquid-liquid systems. Experimental variables include nozzle size, flow velocity, and physical properties.

Notes: This study enables the extension of a recent design procedure for perforated plate extraction columns to include operation under jetting conditions. Correlations of experimental data are given for jet length, jet contraction, drop size, and mass transfer rates in continuous phase controlled liquid-liquid systems. Systems exhibiting very low mass transfer rates were used, and this gave significantly different results from those obtained earlier with moderate rates of mass transfer.

Notes: A kinetic model has been developed for radical chain growth type of reactive polymer processing operations. This model incorporates considerations of the molecular diffusion that is described by a free volume theory and the basic reaction mechanism of the free-radical chain polymerization. Experimental results from the bulk styrene polymerization and a reaction of sheet molding compound (SMC) showed good agreement with the model.
