Notizen: In order to induce a β-turn conformation into the chemotactic linear tripeptide N-formyl-L-methionyl-L-leucyl-L-phenylalanine (fMLP), the new analogue N-formyl-L-methionyl-ΔZleucyl-L-phenylalanine methyl ester [ ΔZLeu]2f MLP-OMe (1) has been synthesized. The conformational and biochemical consequences of this chemical modification have been determined. Analogue 1 has been synthesized by using N-carboxy-(Z)-α,β-didehydroleucine anhydride as key compound to introduce the unsaturated residue at the central position of the tripeptide 1. The x-ray analysis shows that 1 adopts in the crystal a type II β-turn conformation in which the new residue occupies the (i + 2) position, and an intramolecular H bond is formed between the formylic oxygen and the Phe NH. 1H-nmr analysis based on nuclear Overhauser effect measurements suggests that the same folded conformation is preferred in CDCl3 solution; this finding is also supported by molecular dynamics simulation. The biological activity of 1 has been determined on human neutrophils (polymorphonuclear leukocytes) and compared to that shown by f MLP-OMe. Chemotactic activity, granule enzyme release, and superoxide anion production have been determined. Analogue 1 is practically inactive as chemoattractant, highly active in the superoxide generation, and similar to the parent in the lysozyme release. The conformational restriction imposed on the backbone by the presence of the unsaturated residue is discussed in relation with the observed bioselectivity. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Extrusion measurements have been carried out on blends of nylon 6 and a liquid-crystalline copolyesteramide (LCP). The flow curves at low temperature show a behavior similar to that of pure LCP with a rapid rise of the viscosity at low shear rates. At high shear rates the viscosity is lower than that for each of the two components. This minimum has been attributed to the lack of interactions between the two phases and to the formation of fibrils of the LCP phase. The SEM analysis shows, indeed, that fibrils of the LCP phase are produced in the convergent flow at the inlet of the capillary at high shear rates. These fibrils are lost during the flow in the long capillary.

Notizen: The taurine (Tau) containing tripeptide derivative Z-Tau-Pro-Phe-NHiPr (1) has been synthesized as suitable sulfonamido-pseudopeptide model to investigate formation and conformational properties of folded secondary structures stabilized by intramolecular H bonds directly involving the sulfonamide junction. In the crystal the pseudopeptide 1 adopts a type I β-turn with the Pro and Phe residues located at the (i + 1) and (i + 2) corner positions, respectively. The turn is stabilized by a 4 → 1 H bond engaging one of the SO2 oxygen atoms and the isopropylamide NH. In CDCl3 solution the β-turn folding is accompanied by a γ-turn centered at the Pro and involving a 3 → 1 H bond between the SO2 and the Phe NH. A comparison of the structural and conformational properties found in 1 with those of the already known sulfonamido-pseudopeptides, with particular reference to the models containing the Tau-Pro junction, is also reported. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notizen: Blends of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) with a commercial, wholly aromatic, liquid crystalline polymer (LCP), Vectra-B950, have been prepared by melt-blending. Their rheological behavior has been studied in order to determine if the LCP displays a processing aid ability, and under what conditions it gives rise to potentially reinforcing fibrils dispersed in the PPS matrix. The problem of the thermal stability of PPS/LCP blends, which has been considered by some authors as the main obstacle to the production of usable materials due to the evolution of gaseous substances during processing, has been discussed. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Blends of polysulfone (PSu) with a liquid crystalline copolyester (Vectra-A950; VA) have been prepared by melt mixing. Their morphology has been studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Either blend specimens as obtained from the melt mixing or fibers drawn from the melt were used for the SEM analysis. Further information on the morphology of the blends was gained by extraction of the PSu phase with methylene chloride. Preliminary rheological characterization of the blends was made by measuring the viscosity curves at 290 and 300°C, with a capillary viscometer having a die of 1 mm diameter and L/D = 40. Finally, an attempt at improving the phase compatibility was made by synthesizing a copolyester, having the same structure of commercial VA, in the presence of preformed PSu and using the product as a possible compatibilizer. It was demonstrated that the blends are composed of two immiscible phase showing poor adhesion. The LCP droplets could, nevertheless, be deformed into oriented fibrils under elongational flow conditions. The LCP particles were shown to coalesce into large domains, and to migrate toward the outer layer of, e.g., extruded rods, under the influence of appropriate flow conditions, thus showing that there is a strong mutual influence between morphology and rheology of these materials. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Reactive blends (50/50 w/w)of a low molar mass polyethylene containing free carboxylic groups (PEox) and a semiflexible liquid crystalline polyester (SBH 1:1:2, by Eniricerche) have been prepared at 240°C in a Brabender mixer, in the presence of Ti(OBu)4 catalyst, for different mixing times (15,60, and 120 min). In order to prove the formation of a PE-g-SBH copolymer, the blends have been fractionated by successive extractions with boiling toluene and xylene. The soluble fractions and the residues have been analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG and DTG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All analytical procedures concordantly show that PE-g-SBH copolymers with different compositions, arising from differences of either the number of PEox carboxylic groups entering the transesterification or the length of grafted SBH branches, are formed as a result of blending. Depending on the relative content of PE and SBH segments, the copolymers dissolve in the solvents, together with any unrreacted PEox, or remain in the residues, together with neat SBH. Qualitative IR analyses and quantitative TG measurements have shown that the amount of copolymers increases strongly with the mixing time. Preliminary SEM observations indicate that the unfractionated products of the reactive blending carried out with long (120 min) mixing times lead to improved interfacial adhesion and phase dispersion when added to PE/SBH blends. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: The rheological behavior of liquid crystal polymers is still far from completely clarified from both experimental and theoretical points of view. In this paper, the shear flow and the non-isothermal elongation flow behavior of a semirigid liquid crystal copolyester is discussed. The viscosity strongly decreases when the test temperature is increased above the crystal-nematic transition temperature; below this temperature the viscosity is very high. The thermal history strongly affects the shear viscosity. The elongational flow behavior depends also on temperature. Above the crystal-nematic transition temperature and the mesophase is easily spinnable, whereas below this temperature, the spinnability is very poor.

Notizen: The possibility of reinforcing polyethylene (PE) by blending it with a liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) rests on the successful improvement of phase compatibility and interfacial adhesion of these two structurally unlike polymers. The approach that is being considered in our laboratories consists of the synthesis of PE-LCP block or graft copolymers and of their use as compatibilizing agents for PE/LCP blends. In this work, the melt polycon-densation of sebacic acid (S), 4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyl (B), and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (H) has been carried out at temperatures up to 280°C in the presence of an oxidized low molar mass PE sample containing free carboxylic groups (PEox), with the main scope of demonstrating that a PE-g-LCP copolymer may be synthesized by this route. The polycon-densation product has been fractionated by successive extractions with boiling toluene and xylene. The soluble fractions and the residues have been characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG, DTG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The extractions and the analyses have been repeated on a PEox/LCP blend prepared by melt mixing PEox and preformed LCP (SBH 112, by Eniricerche). The results show that, whereas for the blend a fairly clean separation of PEox and SBH can be obtained by solvent extraction, this is not so for the polycondensation product. All analytical procedures concordantly show that a PEox-g-SBH copolymer has, in fact, been obtained. In effect, both PEox and SBH chain segments are present, with different relative ratios, in all fractions of the polycondensate. Moreover, a fairly quantitative esterification of the PEox carboxyl groups has been shown by IR analysis to take place in the adopted conditions. Preliminary morphological investigations carried out by SEM have shown that the addition of the synthesized graft copolymer into HDPE/SBH blends leads to an improvement of the interfacial adhesion. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
