    Notes: Summary A new semidominant mutation in the laboratory mouse, Dickie's small eye (Dey), is described. It is localized on chromosome 2. Heterozygotes show reduced body size, small eyes with coloboma, small or lacking lens with cataract, abnormal folding of the retina and reduction of the pigment layer. The anterior chamber is usually missing. Homozygotes apparently die early in pregnancy.

    Notes: Summary The inheritance and some developmental effects of a new allele of ocular retardation (or J) are described. Affected animals, at 12 days of gestation, show reduced cell death in the eye cup and thickening of the inner wall of the optic fissure. At 11 to 13 days of gestation or 3/or J eyes grafted to the testis do not produce retina as their or J+ littermates do. Adult animals have small eyes with closed lids, abnormal retinal layers, and no optic nerve.

    Notes: Melt spinning of poly(ethylene terephthalate) was studied by measuring the filament tension at the take-up roll and by measuring filament diameter D(X) at various distances X below the spinnerette. A new method is developed to calculate temperature distribution both along and perpendicular to the fiber axis. Results of these calculations are compared with experimental values. The attenuation of filament diameter depends primarily on the take-up speed and the output rate. Spinning temperature and molecular weight have relatively small effects. Mass flow rate and take-up speed are the major factors controlling the cooling rate, while other spinning parameters such as polymer molecular weight and spinnerette orifice size have a small effect. The Trouton viscosity β is both temperature and molecular weight dependent. Values of β derived from these experiments can be expressed mathematically as follows: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \begin{array}{l} \log \beta = \frac{{1900}}{T} - 1.77{\rm for }0.56{\rm IV PET} \\ \log \beta = \frac{{1900}}{T} - 1.50{\rm for }0.84{\rm IV PET.} \\ \end{array} $\end{document}
