Notes: The effect of pore structure on the gasification of two chars impregnated with potassium carbonate catalyst is investigated. Well-characterized char samples were reacted with carbon dioxide, water vapor, and oxygen. The effects of catalyst on the magnitude of the gasification rate as well as on the entire rate vs. conversion pattern are reported. Reactivity and structural data are analyzed to obtain a meaningful comparison of the gasification behavior for all char-gas pairs. Initial intraparticle catalyst dispersion was strongly influenced by the pore structure of the chars. During gasification with carbon dioxide and water, the catalyst appeared to redistribute itself in accordance to the accepted reaction mechanism, leading to superior catalytic activity. The reported measurements indicate that both the pore structure of the chars and the chemistry of a particular reaction are key factors in determining the overall catalytic performance.

Notes: A useful method is reported for calculating temperatures and rates of flow in the unsteady-state operation of natural-circulation loops in single phase. A one-dimensional mathematical model is used with the assumptions that (1) at any instant the volumetric rate of flow is constant around the loop and (2) steady-state friction factors can be applied in transient operations. The loop, consisting of a heat source, heat sink, hot leg, cold leg, and connecting piping, is divided into a number of finite increments. The transient behavior is calculated by the iterative application of the finite-difference momentum and energy balances. Numerical computations made for several cases of transient operations were carried out with the aid of the Standard Eastern Automatic Computer (SEAC).Comparisons of predicted with actual performances were checked by use of two experimental loops employing water and found satisfactory.

Notes: The transient combustion of porous char particles is modelled. The model takes into account the reactions of carbon with CO2 and O2 and the oxidation of CO in the gas phase. It reveals strong effects of the intraparticle thermal gradients and of the pore structure evolution scheme on the burning time and predicts an optimum particle size that gives minimum burning time.

Notes: The diffusion and reaction model developed in a previous paper is extended allowing for shrinkage of the char particles. It is shown that possible shrinkage, arising from disintegration of the solid structure at a certain conversion level, modifies severely the extinction behavior of the reacting particles. Specifically, the region of ambient temperature and particle radius in which the predictions of the nonisothermal and of the isothermal versions of the model differ significantly becomes smaller. However, the particle shrinkage does not affect the ignition phenomena observed since a particle usually ignites at low conversion levels where the radius change is still negligible.

Notes: The problem of multicomponent distillation is considered for a column with an arbitrary number of feed streams and an arbitrary number of side-stream withdrawals. The overheads from the side-stream strippers are admitted to the column, introducing the inert stripping medium into the main column. Provisions are made in the calculations for complete heat balancing, inert injection, and internal reflux cooling. The method of computation is that of a previous paper involving the component-by-component technique. Calculations are made on the main column and give first approximations to the side-stream compositions; stripper calculations are then initiated. An alternating procedure is instituted between the main column and the strippers, the successive iterations continuing until a preassigned accuracy in the desired quantities is reached. An extensive numerical problem is worked.

Notes: A natural-circulation loop with water as the circulating fluid was studied for a range of operation covering two-phase flow. The work reported in this paper is concerned with the periodic oscillations of the flow rate and fluid temperature. The oscillations occurred even with constant heat input and constant cooling-water properties for the heat exchanger. The analytical approach includes a theoretical analysis of an open-ended system and numerical solutions obtained with an analogue computer for a simplified loop system. Also presented are the equations of motion, continuity, and energy, which were developed for a transient two-phase flow model for adaptation to more detailed numerical evaluations.
