Notes: Continuous thermogravimetry is a common method to test materials in gaseous corrosive environments at high temperatures and to elucidate kinetics and mechanisms of high temperature corrosion. Recommendations how to conduct thermogravimetric tests are collected here, points to be considered including sample size and form, surface preparation, reaction chamber, starting procedure, sensitive measurements, gas supply and dosing. This study is meant as a starting foundation for establishing guidelines in high temperature corrosion research.

Notes: The high temperature oxidation behaviour of a 20% Cr/25% Ni/Nb stainless steel, during isothermal exposures of up to 525 h duration, in carbon dioxide, at 900 and 950°C and on subsequent furnace cooling, has been studied by weight change measurements, in combination with thin layer activation. For this purpose a defined region of the steel was activated by a deuteron beam to produce the radioisotopes 51Cr, 52Mn, 54Mn, 56Co, 57Co and 58Co, with independent depth distributions to 70 μm. Measurements of the activity levels of the radioisotopes before, during and after oxidation, monitored scale spallation, thus enabling effects on the oxidation kinetics due to scale cracking to be distinguished. The involvement of each radioisotope was ascertained in the types of scales formed and in the spall produced.

Notes: The effectiveness of Fe+15%Cr+5%Al+0.3%Y coatings. produced by sputter ion plating, in improving the oxidation behaviour of γ-2 Ti3Al at 800°C and γ-TiAl at 900° and 1000°C. during cyclic exposures in air of up to 1000 hours duration, has been studied. The 45-135 μm coatings were tested in both the as-coated condition and following densification by peening. The kinetics of attack and of spallation were followed gravimetrically, while the reaction product compositions were examined by a range of surface analytical techniques.Oxidation protection was afforded by the formation on the coating surface of a γ-Al2O3 oxide scale but chemical reactions at the coating-substrate interface with accompanying voidage development, eventually caused the coating to fail mechanically. To surmount this problem the potential of several ceramic interlayers produced by the same coating route, and interposed as diffusion barriers between the FeCrAlY overlayers and the Ti3Al substrate was examined in 1000 hour oxidation tests at 800°C.

Notes: Characterization of both the chemical and physical nature of interactions at interfaces is crucial to mechanistic understanding of the behaviour of metallic and ceramic materials, including coatings, in aggressive environments at high temperatures. This can be achieved post exposure by the use of defined surface analytical techniques but is reliant upon the deployment of appropriate surface microsurgery procedures, such as metallography, fractography, taper section polishing, selective etching, complete dissolution, etc., for the preparation of surfaces prior to analysis. Recent studies undertaken at the Harwell Laboratory on the combined use of surface microsurgery and surface analysis in the characterization of high temperature corrosion attack are reviewed. These have aimed to improve the precision and the effectiveness of surface microsurgery procedures to ensure the optimum exploitation of the capabilities of surface analytical techniques, especially those in more common usage, such as scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, laser Raman spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectrometry, etc. Although most of the examples presented are of thick (〉 1 μm) corrosion scales and of internal attack, several of the surface microsurgery procedures have relevance to the analysis of sub-micron layers.
