Notes: A mathematical model for simulating particulate removal in gas-solid fluidized beds is developed based on bubble assemblage concepts and particulate collection mechanisms. The importance of fluidization mechanics on the overall fluidized bed filtration performance is emphasized in the present study. Model predictions of fluidized bed filtration efficiencies are shown to compare favorably to the experimental results of various investigations. Because of the general formulation of the proposed model, it is believed to be applicable in the design of fluidized bed filtration operations.

Notes: A heterogeneous model is developed to account for noncatalytic gas-solid reactions in a vertical pneumatic transport reactor. The model takes into consideration both the positive and negative variations of the solid porosity and the variation of the gas diffusivity with the reaction. The method of lines utilizing the second order centered finite difference scheme for the spatial discretization is employed to obtain the model solution.Experiments utilizing a vertical pneumatic transport reactor of a laboratory scale are performed to study the reaction between limestone and sulfur dioxide generated from coal combustion. The reactor is of 16.2 cm ID and 610 cm in length. The experimental data for sulfur retention are reported for various superficial gas velocities and calcium-sulfur molar ratios. Verification of the model with experimental data is conducted. The agreement between the model prediction and experimental data is satisfactory.

Notes: The hydrodynamic behavior of a cocurrent gas-liquid-solid semifluidized bed was investigated. A separate investigation was performed on a packed bed and a fluidized bed under gas-liquid flow conditions similar to that for the semifluidized bed. Parameters of the semifluidized bed under extensive study include pressure drop, gas holdup, onset liquid velocity for semifluidization, and the height of the packed bed section and the fluidized section. The pressure drop of the semi-fluidized bed obtained experimentally was compared favorably with that predicted by the model equations.

Notes: Experiments on phenol biodegradation by a mixed culture in a draft-tube, three-phase fluidized-bed biofilm reactor (DTFBR) at the steady state were performed. The characteristics of biofilms developed in the DTFBR were identified. A steady state biofilm model was proposed that considers the simultaneous diffusion and reaction of oxygen and phenol within the biofilm and the external mass transfer resistance between the biofilm and the completely mixed bulk liquid phase. The proposed model assumes a double-substrate limiting mechanism for microbial growth kinetics, and Haldane and Monod type expressions were used to characterize the dependence of microbial specific growth rate on phenol and oxygen, respectively. The experimental results were used to test the validity of the proposed model.

Notes: Slugging characteristics, including slug velocity and frequency and the height of the slugging bed, for a slugging bed of four different types of coarse particles ranging from 1 to 7 mm in size are determined based on pressure fluctuation behavior of the bed. The slugging characteristics of coarse particle slugging beds are found to be much different from those of the particle slugging beds reported in the literature. The pressure fluctuation behavior in a coarse particle turbulent bed and the transition velocity from a slugging bed to a turbulent bed is also examined.

Notes: Experiments were conducted to study the hydrodynamics of a gas-liquid-solid fluidized bed containing low-density particles. The density and size of the particles employed were comparable to those ordinarily encountered in fluidized-bed bioreactors for either wastewater treatment or fermentation. A dual resistivity probe and a conductivity probe were employed to study the axial holdup of gas and liquid phases and the bubble size distribution. The behavior of the axial holdup distribution for solid, gas, and liquid phases is reported. A mechanistic model, based on solids entrainment and deentrainment mechanisms by bubbles, is developed to describe the behavior of the axial solids holdup distribution. The model is shown to satisfactorily account for the experimental data.
