Notes: Experimental measurements have been conducted of Knudsen diffusion through a model porous medium fabricated by the pelleting of monodisperse silica spheres. Tortuosity factors for this random-assemblage-of-spheres porous solid are calculated and compared with values obtained from both theory and measurements made in the bulk diffusion regime. Evidence is presented to support the use of a mean pore radius calculated as twice the ratio of pore volume to surface area, as opposed to values obtained from mercury porosimetry or sorption isotherm analysis.

Notes: New data and analyses are presented for describing gas and solids behavior in a slurry bubble column. Axial solids concentration and bubble size distributions were measured in a 0.108 m ID slurry bubble column apparatus operated at steady state conditions. The column was operated with and without internal baffles. The slurry and gas superficial velocities ranged from 0.0077 to 0.009 m/s and from 0.031 to 0.24 m/s, respectively. The solid phase consisted of glass spheres in a narrow size range with a mean diameter of 96.5 μm; the liquid phase consisted of tap water. With a one-dimensional sedimentation-dispersion model, the data have been used to predict average solids loadings and axial distributions of the solids for specified operating conditions. Local bubble size and concentration measurements indicate that the slurry bubble column was operated in the churn-turbulent flow regime throughout the entire range of operating conditions used in this study. The impact of internal baffles and solids concentration on the gas and solids behavior is discussed.

Notes: Solids distribution data for a three-phase, batch-fluidized slurry bubble column (SBC) are presented, using air as the gas phase, pure liquids and solutions as the liquid phase, and glass beads and carborundum catalyst powder as the solid phase. Solids distribution data for the three-phase SBC operated in a continuous mode of operation are also presented, using nitrogen as the gas phase, water as the liquid phase, and glass beads as the solid phase. A new model to provide a reasonable approach to predict solids concentration distributions for systems containing polydispersed solids is presented. The model is a modification of standard sedimentation-dispersion model published earlier. Empirical correlations for prediction of hindered settling velocity and solids dispersion coefficient for systems containing polydispersed solids are presented.A new method of evaluating critical gas velocity (CGV) from concentrations of the sample withdrawn at the same port of the SBC is presented. Also presented is a new mapping for CGV which separates the two regimes in the SBC, namely, incomplete fluidization and complete fluidization.

Notes: This paper describes an investigation into the degradation of a purified epoxide based on the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A hardened with p,p′-diaminodiphenylmethane. The method used was that of hot-wire pyrolysis followed by gas chromatography. Special attention was given to the problem of solid residues formed on the pyrolyzer tube, and evidence was found that these probably contain oligomers. Resonance-stabilized free radicals also appear to be formed, and evidence is found to support the idea of dehydration during degradation, originally put forward by Lee. An attempt, based on first principles, is made to explain the degradation of epoxides, using evidence from previous work as well as that described in this paper.

Notes: This paper contains a description of the use of gas chromatography to examine the pyrolytic degradation of epoxide resins. The method depends on the pyrolysis of the material by use of an electrically heated filament, the difficulties of the method are examined and attempts to overcome them are described. The pyrolytic degradation of a resin based on the glycidyl ether of bisphenol-A hardened with 1,2-diaminoethane and also triethylenetetraamine, is described. An attempt has been made to explain, in terms of possible degradation reactions, the actual compounds detected in the pyrolytic breakdown.

Notes: Pressed and wilted samples of sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench var. Rio] were ensiled for periods up to 155 days. A kinetic study of the biochemical changes which occurred during ensiling showed that in wilted sorghum ensilage invert sugars and mannitol levels collectively were maintained at 65% of the original ferment able sugar content of the sorghum. The acidic environment produced by ensiling also served as a pretreatment that resulted in enhanced yields of reducing sugar when the sorghum was contacted with cellulolytic enzymes. The quantity of sugar obtained from enzymatic hydrolysis more than compensated for carbohydrate used by organisms during the ensiling process. Both Saccharomyces uvarum and Clostridium acetobutylicum were able to ferment a medium constituted from pressed sorghum juice and the solution resulting from enzymatic hydrolysis of sweet sorghum ensilage.
