Notes: The effects of tension on the absorbance of water at 60°C into neat and glass-bead-filled, cross-linked polyester are reported. Experimental apparatus and procedure to determine water uptake for these materials subjected to three tensile stresses in the range of 0 to 30 percent of the breaking stress of the neat dry polyester are described. It was found, for bead-filled samples, that a load of approximately 4.9 × 106 N/m2 caused the absorption level to increase by 30 percent over that of an unloaded sample. Tensile load was found to have no effect on the absorption characteristics of neat polyester. However, breaking stress was reduced to less than 15 percent of that in the dry neat material. Optical microscope examinations of damage at the fracture surfaces and at the sample cores indicate that the excess moisture uptake in bead-filled samples was not due to microcrack formation.

Notes: Uncrosslinked cis-trans polybutadiene films were prepared on ultraclean glass microscope slides by uniform dipping. The samples were stored in different environments prior to evaluation of surface oxidation by dynamic contact angle using the Wilhelmy plate method and by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Storage conditions evaluated were: (1) laboratory air at 20°C and 30% relative humidity; (2) vacuum at 0.1 torr; (3) distilled water equilibrated with air; and (4) degassed distilled water. XPS and contact angle analysis indicate that samples exposed to air undergo significant surface oxidation within 8 h. Exposure of polybutadiene to air-equilibrated water results in slower oxidation. Samples stored in degassed water demonstrated less surface oxidation. Vacuum-stored samples demonstrated the least surface oxidation. Dynamic contact angle measurements demonstrated that receding contact angles are more sensitive to changes in surface oxidation than are advancing contact angles, as expected. Changes in surface wetting characteristics are readily observed after only 1 h in laboratory air, although XPS analysis does not show evidence of oxidation within 4 h of air storage.

Notes: The effects of the steric environment of the epoxy group on the curing and other properties of epoxy resins containing 3-oxatricyclo [3,2,1,02,4]oct-6-yl and 4-oxatetracyclo[6,2,1,02,7,03,5]undec-9(or 10)-yl residues were examined. During the anhydride cure of certain members of the former class, evolution gas was observed. This is attributed to intramolecular reaction between the epoxide group and the linkage between the two ring systems. Stereoselectivity in epoxidation of tricyclo[5,2,1,02,6]undec-3-en-8(or 9)-yl derivatives is high, and the two possible series of stereoisomers were obtained, by epoxidation with peracetic acid and by formation and saponification-dehydrochlorination of chlorohydrin-acetates, respectively. The relative reactivities of the two stereoisomeric series were examined. The route via the chlorohydrin is not applicable to epoxidation of dehydronorbornyl derivatives, owing to the occurrence of rearrangements. No analogous stereochemical effects were observed with cyclohexane-based epoxy resins.

Notes: A new surface pretreatment for the preparation of wall-coated open tubular (WCOT) glass capillary columns has been evaluated. This technique involves the application of a non-extractable layer of Superox™-4, a 4,000,000 MW polyethylene glycol, to the glass surface as a pretreatment and deactivation agent. Unlike other polyethylene glycols, Superox-4 is stable at high temperatures (〉 300°C) in the absence of oxygen, coats smoothly onto a bare glass surface and resists droplet formation. WCOT columns (SE-54, Carbowax 20M, and SP-2250) prepared using this technique are compared to columns prepared using a modified Grob [2,3] BaCO3 procedure. The Superox-4 pretreated columns were equal or superior in quality to the BaCO3 pretreated columns, based on the appearance of an activity standard and the effective theoretical plates (Neff) per meter. Chromatograms showing practical application of the WCOT columns prepared using both methods is given.

Notes: An isocratic reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatographic method for the determination of tamoxifen and its metabolites in plasma and tissues is described. Plasma or tissue homogenate was extracted with methanol/dimethyl sulphoxide (4:1 v/v). The supernatant after centrifugation was separated on a BDS-Hypersil column with methanol/0.5 M ammonium acetate (75:25 v/v) as the mobile phase. The recoveries of tamoxifen added to plasma and liver tissue homogenate by the extraction procedure were 102± 1.6 and 98±2.4% (mean±SD, n = 6), respectively. The solutes were detected at 280 nm with a detection limit of 0.25 μg/mL for tamoxifen.
