    Description / Table of Contents: Makroporöse Glycidylmethacrylat(GMA)-Divinylbenzol(DVB)-Copolymerstränge wurden synthetisiert, und die Adsorption von Bilirubin, Albumin und anderen Serumkomponenten wurde untersucht. Die aus DVB/GMA im Gewichtsverhältnis 75/25 aufgebauten Stränge bieten eine hervorragende Bilirubin-Adsorptionsfähigkeit. Wenn die Oberfläche der Stränge vorher mit Albumin beschichtet wurde, wird selektive Adsorption von Bilirubin erzielt, und die Adsorption von Albumin im Serum wird unterdrückt. Außerdem wurde durch Vernetzung des beschichteten Albumins mit Glutaraldehyd die hervorragende Bilirubin-Adsorptionsfähigkeit bewahrt und eine zusätzliche Adsorption von Albumin aus dem Serum erzielt.
    Notes: Macroporous glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymer beads have been synthesized and the adsorption of bilirubin, albumin and other serum components were studied. The beads composed of DVB/GMA in the weight ratio of 75/25 provide an excellent bilirubin adsorption ability. When the surface of the beads was previously coated with albumin, discriminating adsorption of the bilirubin in the serum was attained and the adsorption of albumin was depressed. In addition, when the coated albumin was crosslinked with glutaraldehyde, the excellent bilirubin adsorption ability was maintained, however, an adsorption of albumin from the serum occurred.

    Notes: Blending of polystyrenes (PS) with a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) was performed by using a continuous corotating twin screw extruder. The influence of LCP content on the blending process was studied by changing the barrel heater temperature and the screw speed. The torque of screw shafts, generated during the blending process, was influenced by LCP content and its influence was not simple. The torque generated during the blending process was not directly related to the apparent melt viscosity of blends. Further, the effects of the matrix viscosity on the morphology and mechanical properties of the PS/LCP blends were studied using three grades of PS as matrix resins. It was found that the size of the LCP dispersed phase decreased with increasing matrix viscosity. Consequently, the mechanical properties of the PS/LCP blend were improved. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Steric and electronic effects of the β-methyl group on monomer reactivity have been studied by copolymerization of styrenes and β-methylstyrenes. Steric hindrance of the β-methyl group in the transition state of homopolymerization is so great that the rate of the propagation reaction is considered to be depressed by as much as 1/10-1/20 of the corresponding styrene derivatives. In contrast to this, steric hindrance of the β-methyl group in cross propagation reactions with styrene is found to be very small. The monomer reactivity itself of β-methylstyrenes is a little lower than that of corresponding styrenes. This lowered reactivity of β-methylstyrenes is considered to be due to the electronic effect of the β-methyl group.
