Description / Table of Contents: Deoxyribonucleic acid has been extracted from phage D4 by different techniques: compression, heating, alkalinization, etc. The corresponding aqueous solutions have been studied as functions of different physical factors (concentration, pressure temperature, pH, ionic strength, etc.) by viscometry, by flow birefringence, and by ultraviolet absorption. The biological activity of the phages in the course of these different treatments has also been determined. All the solutions studied were strongly polydispersed. For each one, the mean DNA particle length, the optical anisotropy, and the degree of polydispersion have been determined. These results have been compared to those of DNA of calf thymus. The disagreement between the particle dimensions of the phages and those of free DNA particles has been discussed, and an interpretation is proposed for the apparent contradictions.
