Notizen: Summary Starvation for 24h causes a striking fall in glutathione content from 3.19 ± 0.27 to 1.88 ± 0.14 (X ± SEM) µmol/g tissue and of GGT activity from 31.75 ± 4.17 to 19.49 ± 3.13 (X ± SEM) nmol/min/mg protein in the homogenate from whole mucosa of the upper small intestinal segments. This was associated with a significant increase in GSH-Px activity and the content of lipid peroxides (measured by the thiobarbituric assay). On semi-synthetic iron-supplemented diet the activities of GSH-T and GGT were significantly decreased as compared with crude diet. On semisynthetic irondepleted diet GSH-T and GGT activities were further depressed, but this was accompanied with an additional depression of GSH, glutathione reductase (GSSG-R), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and lipid peroxide concentrations. Food deprivation significantly lowers the mucosal GSH-content and could lead to a destabilization of this system presumably by increased oxidative stress. As compared to normal “crude” diet, semisynthetic diets and oral iron depletion have been shown to cause a depression of the intestinal GSH system. As a consequence of these effects, the resistance of the small intestinal mucosa toward exogeneous dietary toxins might be reduced.

Notizen: Abstract We analysed the MRI findings in 23 patients with callosal dysgenesis in relation to their associated telencephalic anomalies to investigate the morphological significance of the development of Probst's bundles and the anterior commissure in congenital callosal dysgenesis. We classified callosal dysgenesis into three types: total defect (9 patients), partial defect (7) and hypoplasia (7). Associated anomalies were observed in 15 patients, including migration disorder (8 patients), micrencephaly (5), and lipoma (2). The remaining 8 patients had no associated anomalies. Probst's bundles were not identified in 4 patients with a severe migration disorder. An absent or hypoplastic anterior commissure was observed in 9 of the 16 patients with callosal defect and all 7 of those with callosal hypoplasia. Colpocephaly and keyhole dilatation of the temporal horns were seen in 16 and 21 patients, respectively. Callosal dysgenesis may occur not only through a defect in the callosal anlage, but also from impaired growth of axonal fibres projecting from the cerebral isocortex. Therefore, associated telencephalic anomalies may be responsible for additional features in callosal dysgenesis. Consequently, identification of Probst's bundles and the anterior commissure may be important when assessing cortical development in patients with callosal dysgenesis.

Notizen: Abstract  The polymerization behavior of perfluorooctyltrimethoxysilane (PFOS) in ethanol, which is acid-catalyzed by 0.25 M HCl, has been examined using time-resolved near-IR and 2D near-IR correlation spectra. In the time-resolved near-IR spectra, the bands at 5164 and 4825 cm−1 have been assigned to the combination bands of water and ethanol OH groups, respectively. It has been found that the absorbance variation of the two near-IR bands occurs in a two-step process. The absorbance of the 5164 cm−1 band rapidly decreases in the initial step but increases exponentially in the second step, while that of the 4825 cm−1 band rapidly increases both in the initial step and, exponentially, in the second step. These results indicate that the time-dependent absorbance variation of the two near-IR bands reflects the polymerization process of PFOS, in which consumption and release of water molecules and release of methanol in the two-step process occur as a consequence of the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of methoxy groups and the formation of silanols (SiOH) to form a siloxane bond. It has also been found that this polymerization process is distinctly reflected in the 2D near-IR correlation spectra.
