Notizen: Abstract Skyrme type potentials are known to lead — in the framework of the scaling model — to a finite-nucleus incompressibility valueK A where the volume coefficientK v equals roughly the negative surface coefficient Ks. This is found for Skyrme interactions with Kv between 200 and 360 MeV. In a semi-classical relativistic approach on the basis of theσ — ω model (linear as well as non-linear) using in addition local density approximations, we findK s to depend in particular on the surface energy coefficienta s , and not so much on the value ofK v . For a realistic value of as, both the linear and the non-linearσ — ω model (with NL1 parameter set) yield a ratio ¦K s K v ¦ of approximately 1. We discuss implications of this finding with a particular view on recent empirical results onK v andK s .

Notizen: The use of finite element methods for turbulent boundary-layer flow is relatively recent and of limited extent.1 In the present study, we extend the group variable approach of Fletcher and Fleer2,3 to treat turbulent boundary layer flows with heat transfer using a two-equation turbulence model. The main concepts in the formulations include a Dorodnitsyn-type transformation which uses a velocity component as the transverse variable, a ‘variational’ formulation for the transformed equations using special test functions and development of a two-equation turbulence model in terms of the turbulent kinetic energy and turbulence dissipation rate as additional field variables. Several numerical test cases have been examined comparing the results with finite difference calculations and comparing the two-equation turbulence model with an algebraic turbulence model.

Notizen: A ‘family’ of tree data structures for adaptive mesh refinement is described and details concerning the associated logic are provided. The data structures encompass triangular elements and quadrilateral elements in two dimensions and quadrilateral bricks in three dimensions. Furthermore, both linear (bilinear) and quadratic (biquadratic) element types, respectively, are developed. Representative refinement results are given for the bilinear, trilinear and biquadratic types and associated performance studies made for the refinement procedure.

Notizen: Vector and parallel algorithms for finite-element analysis using the element-by-element (EBE) data structure are developed. The algorithms are based on the EBE approach in conjunction with gradient-type iterative solution. The essential idea is to exploit the independent dense local-element matrix-vector calculations and reconfigure them to take advantage of vector or parallel processing capabilities. The ideas also are well suited to finite-element adaptive refinement computations. Specific algorithmic details related to the implementations are given, together with results of speed-up performance studies conducted on the vector and parallel architectures. The basic vector and parallel versions of the matrix-vector product for the EBE scheme are very straightforward modifications of the EBE algorithm, requiring little coding change.
