Notizen: Methods for comparing the accuracy of numerical methods for the solution of parabolic partial differential equations are briefly surveyed. Criteria for a more systematic comparison are proposed and applied to an accuracy comparison of the classical and the modified Saul'yev methods and the Crank-Nicholson method on a simple linear problem. The results obtained, which include observation of the existence of optimal spatial mesh size for the two Saul'yev methods, are discussed.

Notizen: The orthonormal method of integral relations (MIR) is extended to calculate wake flow problems. Two previous difficulties are overcome: (1) the non-constant integral domain is eliminated by introducing a linear transformation in the formulation; (2) the difficulty associated with determining unique orthonormal weighting functions is overcome by an iterative scheme. The new formulation is applied to calculate a wake flow. A high-order solution for N up to 4 is obtained with relative ease.

Notizen: An explicit time-domain transmitting boundary for the analysis of dam-reservoir interactions is presented. This transmitting boundary is a semi-analytical solution of the governing wave equation of the far field of the reservoir. By using this transmitting boundary, the radiation condition and water compressibility can readily be incorporated in the time-domain analysis of dam-reservoir systems. Therefore, the finite element method can be used to accurately analyse a dam-reservoir system including the semi-infinite reservoir while maintaining its efficiency in time-domain analysis. Numerical results have excellent agreement with the available analytical solution. Results also show that the proposed explicit transmitting boundary is more efficient computationally than the implicit transmitting boundary presented by Tsai and Lee.

Notizen: This paper discusses incompressible Navier-Stokes solution methods with an emphasis on the pseudocompressibility method. A steady-state flow solver based on the pseudocompressibility approach is then described. This flow solver code has been used to analyse the internal flow in the Space Shuttle main engine hot-gas manifold. Salient features associated with this three-dimensional realistic flow simulation are discussed. Numerical solutions relevant to the current engine analysis and the redesign effort are discussed along with experimental results. This example demonstrates the potential of computational fluid dynamics as a design tool for aerospace applications.

Notizen: A new numerical procedure for predicting multiple solutions of Taylor vortices in a spherical gap is presented. The steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in primitive variables are solved by a finite- difference method using a matrix preconditioning technique. Routes leading to multiple flow states are designed heuristically by imposing symmetric properties. Both symmetric and asymmetric solutions can be predicted in a deterministic way. The current procedure gives very fast convergence rate to the desired flow modes. This procedure provides an alternative way of finding all possible stable steady axisymmetric flow modes.
