Notes: Abstract Background This study evaluates the ability of MRI to stage transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract. Methods Nine patients who had transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract detected by other imaging modalities underwent MRI examination at 1.5 T. Imaging included pre- and postgadolinium-DTPA T1-weighted images (9 patients) pre- and postgadolinium chelate T1-weighted fat-suppressed spin echo (7 patients). Postcontrast images were acquired prior to the presence of gadolinium within the collecting system (〈2 min postcontrast), intermediate (2.5–8 min), and late (〉10 min) postcontrast. Images were prospectively interpreted and lesion staging was determined. Correlation with histopathology was obtained in all cases. Results Transitional cell cancers were demonstrated in 9/9 patients, and tumors ranged in size from 2 to 8 cm (mean = 3.8 cm) in one dimension. Correct tumor staging was performed in 8/9 patients. The staging error in one case occurred because direct tumor extension into the renal parenchyma was not detected. Conclusions The results of this preliminary study show that MRI stages transitional cell cancers relatively well; however, MRI is not able to detect superficial invasion of renal parenchyma.

Notes: Summary The epithelial ultrastructure of the glomerulus of fresh- and sea-water adapted rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri was examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy after in vivo-perfusion fixation. Adaptation to seawater for a period of up to 9 weeks was not associated with a change in glomerular size, although after one year in seawater both glomeruli and their capsules were significantly smaller than the glomeruli of freshwater adapted fish. In freshwater adapted trout the epithelial ultrastructure conformed to the general vertebrate pattern, with rounded podocytes, well-defined primary processes and interdigitating pedicels. Adaptation to seawater was associated with a marked increase in the frequency of cytoplasmic microprojections. In many glomeruli there was a flattening of the podocytes, broadening of the primary processes, and areas of closely-packed pedicels were common. These observations are discussed in the light of previous studies on the mammalian kidney and the changes of single nephron function known to be associated with adaptation of trout to increased environmental salinities.

Notes: The aromatic polysulfone poly(oxy-1,4-phenylenesulfonyl-1,4-phenyleneoxy-1,4-phenyleneiso-propylidene-1,4-phenylene) (I) showed no change in flexural yield strength after doses of γ-radiation up to 600 Mrad in vacuum at 35,80, and 125°C (Tg = 190°C)). However, the flexural strength decreased markedly with doses above 100 Mrad on irradiation in air, to 40-60% of the initial value after 200-400 Mrad, depending on the sample and the irradiation conditions. Chain crosslinking was predominant over scission for irradiation in vacuum at all temperatures; (G(X), G(S), and G(S)/G(X) increased with the irradiation temperature, but G(S)/G(X) decreased to zero above Tg. Poly(oxy-1,4-phenylenesulfonyl-1,4-phenylene) (II) behaved similarly, except that the flexural strength was found to be very dependent on the thermal treatment of the sample. This polymer showed a remarkable retention of its mechanical properties on irradiation up to 200°C (Tg = 230°C) in the absence of air, the flexural strength being retained up to 500 Mrad. Radiation annealing occurred at 35°C in vacuum and air and combined radiation and thermal annealing at 125 and 220°C. Progressive removal of surface layers from flexural test bars of I irradiated in air showed that the decrease in flexural strength with dose could be explained by a decrease in the molecular weight towards the surface resulting from radiation-oxidation reactions.

Notes: Microscopic examination of adipocytes isolated from adult rat epididymal adipose tissue revealed numerous small cells (〈 10 μm) morphologically similar to larger adipocytes. These small adipocytes appear identical to a new classification of adipose cells termed preadipocytes. Electron micrographs of these preadipocytes revealed examples of cells 〈 10 μm in diameter in various stages of maturation and lipid accumulation. The percent distribution pattern of these small adipocytes was not significantly altered by exercise although exercise shifted the distribution patterns of the larger cells (〉 30 μm) toward a smaller mean cell size. The quantitative significance of preadipocytes is not established but these preliminary observations indicate that adipocytes 〈 10 μm in diameter may account for a numerically greater proportion of the total adipocytes observed in collagenase isolated preparations than heretofore recognized, although their contribution to total adipose mass is probably negligible.

Notes: Two aromatic polysulfones, poly(oxy-1,4-phenylenesulfonyl-1,4-phenyleneoxy-1,4-phenyleneisopropylidene-1,4-phenylene) (I) and poly (oxy-1,4-phenylenesulfonyl-1,4-phenylene) (II), undergo crosslinking and chain scission at 30°C during γ-irradiation, the former being predominant in vacuum and the latter in air. Both processes occurred more readily in I, which contains isopropylidene linkages. Gel measurements gave G(crosslink) = 0.051, G(scission) = 0.012 for this polymer at 30°C in vacuum. Increased irradiation temperatures resulted in higher crosslinking and gas yields, especially above the glass transition temperature. The tensile strength, flexural strength, and modulus of I were unaffected by γ-irradiation up to about 50 Mrad in air, but the strength decreased markedly at higher doses. The elongation at break decreased progressively with dose. For both polymers, G(gas) = 0.04 at 30°C with the main products being SO2, H2, CO2, CH4, and H2O.

Notes: Scanning electron microscopy of corrosion casts of blood vessels permits detailed and accurate study of the microcirculation. The present study examined the renal microvasculature of the rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri. The conventional picture of a glomerulus with one afferent arteriole was common, but glomeruli were often supplied by two afferent arterioles. In the majority of these, the intrarenal artery gave rise to a single afferent arteriole that branched to form two smaller vessels before reaching the glomerulus. Glomeruli with two afferent arterioles that arose independently from the intrarenal artery also occurred. The majority of glomeruli had a single efferent arteriole, but a proportion of glomeruli had two efferent arterioles. Efferent arterioles were smaller in diameter than the afferent arterioles. The glomerular capillaries were arranged in lobules, with few anastomoses between lobules, so that, for glomeruli with two afferent or two efferent arterioles, vascular perfusion and thus filtration within discrete lobules is probable.

Notes: An iron chromium aluminium yttrium steel was exposed to a simulated coal gasifier atmosphere containing 1000 ppm and 2200 ppm hydrogen chloride at 450 °C. Increasing hydrogen chloride content was found to accelerate reaction rates, and significantly alter the microstructure and composition of the corrosion product. Tentative explanations for these results, involving vapour phase transport of metal chlorides are proposed.

Notes: Summary Isolated glomeruli of the rainbow trout have been exposed in vitro to125I-angiotensin II (0.88 × 10−9 M) and binding sites located by light-microscopic autoradiography. These studies provide evidence of specific binding of angiotensin II by glomeruli. Binding was significantly inhibited by excess (10−5 M) unlabelled angiotensin II, but a high degree of non-specific binding also occurred. The mammalian competitive antagonist, saralasin (3 × 10−7 M) did not influence125I-angiotensin II binding to fish glomeruli. Intense binding of125I-angiotensin II was noted at the vascular pole of some glomeruli.
