Notizen: Abstract Some of the measures suggested for amelioration of drought effects include application of N fertilizer and plant growth regulators (PGRs). Since N2-fixing bacteria produce plant growth substances (PGRs), the effect of foliar application of an active strain of Klebsiella sp. (KUPOS) on IR-50 rice was examined using three foliar sprays applied at 10-day intervals. Irrigation once every 3 days was essential for plant growth. Application of KUPOS and 40 kg N ha–1 improved grain yield of acutely water stressed plants from 330 kgha–1 to more than 1300 kgha–1 along with an improvement in several growth variables and yield determinants. Indole acetic acid, kinetin and GA3, in a mixture of 10–4 M of each, were less effective than KUPOS in alleviating stress effects. The adverse effects of water stress on respiration and photosynthesis as indicated by CO2 exchange were also alleviated by these treatments. While uptake of K, Mg, Ca, Fe and Mo was increased, Na content decreased, accompanied by an increase in proline content. The order of effectiveness of the treatments was 40 kg N ha–1 〉KUPOS〉PGRs.

Notizen: Summary The utility of spraying some known N2-fixing microorganisms on rice leaves grown both in N-less sand culture and under field conditions was examined. The effect was compared with that of spraying a phyllosphere N2-fixing isolate of Klebsiella, KUPBR2, and application of nitrogenous fertilizers. All the growth parameters studied including dry weight and N-content were enhanced. Under field conditions number of tillers was increased by 26% withKlebsiella pneumoniae M5al and by 65% with Aphanothece. The dry weight of the plants was enhanced by 61–119%. The yield per 10 m2 was almost doubled with Aphanothece, Beijerinckia 8007,Mycobacterium flavum, K. pneumoniae M5al and KUPBR2. The increases observed withStreptomyces sp. G12 though less spectacular was significant at 1% level with respect to several growth parameters.K. pneumoniae M5al,M. flavum andStreptomyces sp. G12 exhibited nitrogenase activity both in laboratory culture and in association with rice plants.

Notizen: Summary The beneficial effect of spraying some highly active phyllosphere N2-fixing microorganisms on high and low yielding cultivars of rice plants as compared with that of urea applied at different doses are described. The dry weight, N-content, 1000 grain weight, and yield were remarkably increased in all cases with the application of phyllosphere microorganisms. The performance of two isolates KUP4 and KUPBR2 with IR-8 and IR-26 rice, was better than that of 52 kg urea-N per hectare. IR-579 rice leaves in association with some phyllosphere bacteria reduced acetylene at the rate of 664–816 nmoles/g leaf/h. In IR-26 rice the effect of application of bacterial suspension at three phases of plant growth corresponded very well with that of urea application in three split doses under identical conditions. Recommended fertilizer rates produced the same yield as the half dose plus bacterial spray in the cultivars Pankaj and Rupsail. Fertilizer application in Pankaj and Rupsail rice reduced nitrogenase activity and the beneficial effects of phyllosphere N2-fixation was reduced by 40–55%.

Notizen: Summary Five highly active N2-fixing strains of Klebsiella isolated from the phyllosphere of tropical plants, KUPBR1, KUPBR2, KUPM, KUP4 and KUP6 along withAzotobacter vinelandii OP,A. chroococcum G40 andDerxia gumnosa were sprayed on the foliage of a high yielding wheat cultivar, Kalyansona. The strains of Klebsiella enhanced dry wt., chrorophyll and nitrogen content, and 1000 grain weight. Grain yield in inoculated plants varied between 19.9 and 25.09 quintals ha−1 against 24.34 quintals with urea. Best results were obtained with KUP4 which when applied at half dose was as effective as 52.5 kg Urea-N ha−1. Azotobacter and Derxia only slightly improved growth and nitrogen content of grain or straw.

Notizen: Electroinitiated polymerizations can be carried out by direct electron transfer via constant potential electrolysis.1-3 In doing so, the anodic (Ep, a) and the cathodic (Ep, c) potentials of the monomers must be measured by cyclic voltammetry. The cathodic peak potentials of halophenols were measured on Pt0 electrode versus Ag0/Ag+ in acetonitrile.Electroinitiated polymerization of bis(pyridine), bis(4-chloro-2,6-dibromophenoxide) copper (II) complex was studied in dimethylformamide-tetrabutylammonium fluoroborate by direct electron transfer from the cathode. Poly(phenylene oxides) obtained from the anolyte revealed that the monomer undergoes 1,2 as well as 1,4 addition reactions.Lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energies of the monomers were calculated by Hückel molecular orbital theory. The experimental Ep, c values were correlated to theoretical LUMO energies and electron densities using a multivariable linear regression model.

Notizen: Defatted jute stick was treated with sodium hydroxide solution (2% w/v) at ambient temperature (∼ 32∼C) and boiling water bath temperature (95-97°C). Infrared (IR) spectra of defatted jute stick and alkali-treated jute stick were studied. The IR spectra of the alkalitreated jute stick were conspicuous by the absence of the 1730 cm-1 band, as compared to that of jute stick. Another characteristic feature of the alkali treated jute sticks is the absence of the band at 1240 cm-1, which is replaced by the 1265 and 1225 cm-1 bands; other bands in the above samples also recorded significant changes.

Notizen: Jute stick was treated with white-rot fungus for incubation periods of 6 days (MBA) and 12 days (MBB). The infrared spectra of fungus treated samples (MBA and MBB) and control jute stick (MBC) were analyzed and compared. The bands attributed mainly to hemicellulose show an increase in absorbance intensity ratios (Aν/A2900) with increase of incubation time. Similarly the bands attributed to lignin show an increase in the absorbance intensity ratios with increase of incubation time. Increase in the intensity of 1635 cm-1 band with increase of incubation time was also observed.

Notizen: Jute stick was bleached with sodium chlorite and alkaline hydrogen peroxide solutions. The infrared (IR) spectra of bleached samples and jute stick were analyzed and compared. The bleached samples were characterized by higher absorbance intensity ratios (Av/A2900) of the bands attributed to hemicellulose. Among the bleached samples the chlorite-bleached sample showed higher intensity for the bands mentioned. The bands attributed to lignin are either absent or very weak in the chlorite-bleached jute stick as compared to that of peroxide-bleached jute stick, although some residual lignin was present in the substrate. The 1635 cm-1 band attribute to the vibration of adsorbed water molecules in the noncrystalline regions in cellulose appears as a sharp peak in chlorite-bleached jute stick and as a shoulder in peroxide-bleached jute stick. This can be attributed to the difference in the nature of the two bleaching processes.
