    Notes: Abstract The near-infrared spectra (9500 to 11000 cm−1) of pure water and aqueous solutions of alkali halides, MgCl2, NaClO4, and R4NBr were measured at temperatures between 10 and 55°C and pressures up to 500 MPa. From the analysis of the absorption spectra the following conclusions are drawn. (1) The ice I-like open structure is destroyed and the packed structure is formed as the pressure is increased. (2) The open structure of water is destroyed by the addition of alkali halides and MgCl2 and water molecules are restricted around the ions by ion-dipole interactions. This results in a loosening of the O−H bond. (3) The perchlorate ion destroys the open structure of water and the ion-dipole interaction with water is insignificant. (4) The Bu4N+ ion forms water structure around the ion similar to that of the clathrate open structure.

    Notes: Abstract The near-infrared absorption spectra (9500 to 11000 cm−1) of HOD, 20 mol% in D2O were measured at temperatures between 4 and 55°C and pressures up to 500 MPa. From the analysis of the spectra, the following conclusions are drawn. (1) At temperatures below about 38°C, the ice I-like bulky structure is destroyed to form the dense structure which reflects the high-pressure ice-like structure as the pressure is increased. (2) At temperatures above about 38°C, the bulky structure hardly remains at atmospheric pressure and the formation of dense structure proceeds monotonically with increasing pressure. The results and conclusion obtained in the present paper agrees with those obtained for pure H2O water in the previous investigation.

    Notes: Abstract  To study the proliferation and differentiation of pituitary corticotrophs, we administered bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) to pregnant rats at 15.5–21.5 days of gestation and to rat pups at 3, 7, and 28 days after birth. The pituitary sections of fetuses and pups were consecutively immunostained with anti-BrdU and anti-adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) to detect proliferating cells and corticotrophs, respectively. The number of cells labeled with BrdU, ACTH, or both were counted. The diameters of their nuclei and the volume of the pituitary were measured. The BrdU-positive cells were around 76,000–96,000/mm3 during the period studied. The corticotrophs were first detected in the fetus at 15.5 days and they increased during the fetal and postnatal periods. The double-labeled cells were first detected in the 17.5-day fetus. They increased markedly at 19.5 days and comprised about one-quarter of the corticotrophs that increased in 24 h at this stage. These results indicate that: (1) at 15.5–18.5 days the corticotrophs were derived almost exclusively from undifferentiated cells; (2) during the later fetal and early postnatal periods, the proliferation of existing corticotrophs contributed, at least in part, to their increase; (3) About 1/20 of proliferating cells differentiated to corticotrophs when their increase was required.

    Notes: Abstract Background: Creating a “safety zone” during laparoscopic cholecystectomy is defined as dissection of the cystic duct as close as possible to the gallbladder. Methods: In 29 out of 802 cases in which laparoscopic cholecystectomy was difficult to perform due to uncertainty about the orientation of Calot's triangle, intraoperative cholangiography was performed, using a titanium clip as a marker that designated the safety zone. The distance between the clip and the common hepatic duct or the common bile duct could be determined by evaluation of two intraoperative cholangiograms taken in different orientation. Results: If the clip was located in the safety zone, and was distant from the common hepatic duct or common bile duct, the safety of preparation around the clip was ensured. No complication was encountered in these cases with this method. Eventually, no biliary tract injury was experienced, and the overall conversion rate to open cholecystectomy was only 0.4% (3 of 802 consecutive cases). Conclusions: This method of confirming the safety zone by intraoperative cholangiography is a useful procedure for avoiding inadvertent injury to the biliary tract.

    Notes: Abstract Lower-extremity venous stasis during laparoscopic cholecystectomy was evaluated in 16 patients by monitoring the blood velocity in the femoral vein and the femoral vein size (cross-sectional area) using color Doppler ultrasonography. The blood velocity in the femoral vein decreased significantly after the start of 10-mmHg abdominal insufflation in the supine position. When the patients were placed in a reverse Trendelenburg position during 10-mmHg insufflation, blood velocity in the femoral vein further decreased. However, velocity returned to the baseline after deflation. The cross-sectional area of the femoral vein was significantly elevated after the start of 10 mm Hg insufflation in the supine position. When patients were placed in the reverse Trendelenburg position during 10-mmHg insufflation, this parameter was further elevated, but returned to the baseline soon after deflation. These results indicate that femoral vein stasis during laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be minimized by reducing the pressure of abdominal insufflation and avoiding elevation of the patient's head as much as possible.
