Notizen: Summary The effect of murine α/β interferon (IFN) on experimental metastasis was investigated using B16-F10 melanoma cells. Since the outcome of metastasis of blood-borne tumor cells is mainly determined within the first 24 h after i.v. inoculation of tumor cells, i.p. injection of IFN was focused on this critical early phase. The inhibition of pulmonary metastases by IFN was found to be maximal when given 3 h prior to tumor cell inoculation, while mice with 24-h and 12-h pretreatment and simultaneous IFN treatment also showed a reduction in metastases, but to a lesser extent. However, mice receiving IFN 2 h after tumor cell inoculation did not show any reduction. Tumor cells cultured for 24 h in IFN-containing medium showed no reduction in metastases. Administration of anti-asialo GMl prior to IFN treatment was found to eliminate the inhibitory effect of IFN 3 h pretreatment. However, natural killer (NK) cell activity in vitro measured at 3 h, 13 h and 24 h after IFN administration was enhanced to the same extent, not paralleling the inhibitory effect on pulmonary metastases. These data indicate that prepared host status against blood-borne tumor cells is established by IFN pretreatment, being maximal when injected several hours prior to tumor cell inoculation, and that this effect is substantially dependent on NK cell activity, though the implication of other factors is not excluded.

Notizen: Abstract Collision-induced reactions of size-selected cluster anions, (CO2) n − and (N2O)nO− with He and Kr atoms were studied at collision energies from 0.1 to 2.0 eV (center-of mass) by means of a tandem mass-spectrometer equipped with a pair of octapole ion guides. The dominant process was evaporation of the constituent molecules from the parent cluster ion. The absolute cross section for the evaporation was measured as functions of the size of the parent cluster ion and the collision energy. The reaction was explained by collisional excitation of the parent cluster ion followed by its unimolecular dissociation. The observed cross sections which correspond to those for the collisional excitation agree with those calculated in terms of charge-induced dipole and induced dipole-induced dipole interactions between the parent cluster ion and the target atom. The distributions of the product ions resulting from the unimolecular dissociation were reproduced by a simple calculation based on RRK theory. In the collision of (CO2) n − , the cross sections for (CO2) 10 − and (CO2) 14 − were significantly small and their abundances in the product ion distributions were particularly large. These findings indicate that (CO2) 10 − and (CO2) 14 − are stable species. On the other hand, stable species in (N2O)nO− was found to be (N2O)5O−.

Notizen: Abstract The breathing vibration of Ar N cluster,N=13, 20, 25, 30 and 55, was investigated by use of the molecular dynamics method. The average distance $$(\bar r)$$ averaged over the positions of all Ar atoms with respect to the center of mass was calculated as a function of time and its frequency spectrum was derived by the Fourier transform analysis. The $$\bar r$$ value was proved to be a good index of the breathing vibration in comparison with the exact breathing vibration of an Ar dense sphere. The vibrational frequency thus estimated,f MD, was found to increase with the cluster sizen as expected.
