Notes: The solution of the stream function-vorticity equations is developed using a multigrid method to improve efficiency in a finite-element p-method. The equations are discretized using 2-D Lagrange finite elements (linear, quadratic and cubic) and solved in iteratively decoupled form using successive approximation and continuation methods. The comparative performance of several multigrid and direct matrix solvers is investigated with respect to convergence characteristics and time performance on the Cray Y-MP.

Notes: We develop some special conformal maps and related strategies for grid generation in certain ‘difficult’ domains. Of particular interest are non-convex domains, and domains with corners and cusps.

Notes: A p-type finite-element scheme is introduced for Navier-Stokes problems in a fully coupled stream function/vorticity formulation. The resulting coupled non-linear system is solved using a Newton iteration with incremental continuation in the Reynold's number. A biconjugate gradient (BCG) scheme in an element-by-element setting is applied to solve the linearized system at each Newton iteration. Pseudo-element block preconditioners produce a practical PBCG method, even for ill-conditioned systems arising from high-p elements in the case of Stokes flow. The problem at higher Reynolds numbers further limits p.

Notes: A ‘family’ of tree data structures for adaptive mesh refinement is described and details concerning the associated logic are provided. The data structures encompass triangular elements and quadrilateral elements in two dimensions and quadrilateral bricks in three dimensions. Furthermore, both linear (bilinear) and quadratic (biquadratic) element types, respectively, are developed. Representative refinement results are given for the bilinear, trilinear and biquadratic types and associated performance studies made for the refinement procedure.

Notes: An analysis, based on the use of Taylor series expansions, is developed to determine accuracy estimates for derivatives in one and two dimensions computed by differentiation of a finite-element interpolant or approximation. The analysis clarifies some issues concerning special points at which the derivatives are believed to be exceptionally accurate with higher convergence rates (superconvergence). Moreover, it leads directly to a class of post-processing strategies for the derivatives and offers a more direct constructive approach to the subject.

Notes: Transport of a chemical species through a viscous fluid with reaction at an interface is modelled by a quasi-static process in which the transient behaviour is dominated by motion of the reactive surface. The reaction is accompanied by a molar volume change which leads to motion of the free surface. A decoupled stream function-vorticity formulation is introduced in conjunction with a moving finite element method. This also permits convenient treatment of the free and reactive surface boundary conditions. The model is applied to the growth of oxide films on silicon surfaces and reveals the effect of surface curvature on film growth.

Notes: A perturbation analysis is developed for 1-D shallow water flow over a curved bed for applications such as spillways. The perturbation approach leads to a new formulation of the problem with associated weak integral statement and approximation using finite elements. The flow may exhibit a hydraulic jump in the downstream regime. An artificial dissipation technique is introduced to stabilize the non-linear problem and suppress numerical oscillations. Numerical results demonstrate the performance of the model and compare it with the steep-slope shallow water formulation corresponding to the model with zero curvature.

Notes: A novel method of mesh generation is proposed which is based on the use of fractal concepts to derive contractive, affine transformations. The transformations are constructed in such a manner that the attractors of the resulting maps are a union of the points, lines and surfaces in the domain. In particular, the mesh nodes may be generated recursively as a sequence of points which are obtained by applying the transformations to a coarse background mesh constructed from the given boundary data. A Delaunay triangulation or similar edge connection approach can then be performed on the resulting set of nodes in order to generate the mesh. Local refinement of an existing mesh can also be performed using the procedure. The method is easily extended to three dimensions, in which case the Delaunay triangulation is replaced by an analogous 3-D tesselation.
