Notes: Reaction of glucal 1 with alkoxybenzene leads after hydrogenation and deacetylation to β-C glycosides 4, which can be used as chiral compounds in the synthesis of chiral calamitic liquid crystals. The combination with aliphatic aldehydes leads to liquid crystals 5 showing a monotropic SA phase, with aromatic p-alkoxy-substituted aldehydes to compounds 6 with enantiotropic cholesteric and SA phases. Reaction with p-alkoxy-substituted phenylboronic acids gives liquid crystals 7 forming SA and ferroelectric SC* phases. They all exhibit a high twisting power and blue phases in contact preparation.

Notes: Thermotropic Liquid Crystals Based on Amphiphilic CarbohydratesThe paper gives an advanced report (related to the reviews of Jeffrey) on thermotropic mesogens based on carbohydrate amphiphiles. The different influences being responsible for the formation, stabilization, and for the type of the mesophases, such as the hydrogen bond network, the van der Waals interactions of the lipophilic chains, the regio- and stereochemical arrangements, and the molecular geometry are discussed more in detail. Furthermore, fluorinated sugars and selected inositol derivatives are involved in order to discuss the liquid crystalline behaviour of amphiphilic sugar mesogens.

Notes: D-Galacturonic Acid Derivatives, VI.  -  D-Galacturonic Acid Derivatives with Liquid Crystalline PropertiesEsters, thioesters, and amides of D-galacturonic acid have been synthesized from alcohols, thioalcohols, and amines having long alkyl chains. Key intermediate of the reaction with the different nucleophiles was the 1,2;3,4-di-O-isopropylidene-α-D-galactopyranuronosyl chloride (3). Deisopropylidenation of the protected esters, thioesters, and amides was achieved by trifluoroacetic acid. The investigation of the liquid crystalline properties was carried out with a polarizing microscop, DSC measurements, and X-ray diffraction. Molecules with three long alkyl chains can be obtained by reaction of amides 5h and 5i with thioalcohols. MM2 calculations voted a Y-shaped structure of the mercaptals 8a and 8b which do exhibit thermotropically a columnar hexagonal mesophase (Dhd) as we have proved by X-ray diffraction.
