    Notizen: The exit or desorption of free radicals from latex particles is an important kinetic process in an emulsion polymerization. This article unites a successful theory of radical absorption (i.e., initiator efficiency), based on propagation in the aqueous phase being the rate determining step for entry of charged free radicals, with a detailed model of radical desorption. The result is a kinetic scheme applicable to true “zero-one” systems (i.e., where entry of a radical into a latex particle already containing a radical results in instantaneous termination), which is still, with a number of generally applicable assumptions, relatively simple. Indeed, in many physically reasonable limits, the kinetic representation reduces to a single rate equation. Specific experimental techniques of particular significance and methods of analysis of kinetic data are detailed and discussed. A methodology for both assessing the applicability of the model and its more probable limits, via use of known rate coefficients and theoretical predictions, is outlined and then applied to the representative monomers, styrene and methyl methacrylate. A detailed application of the theory and illustration of the methodology of model discrimination via experiment is contained in the second article of this series. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: In emulsion polymerizations, desorption (exit) from latex particles of monomeric radical species that arise from transfer can be an important determinant of the overall kinetics. An examination of various methodologies for the testing of postulated free radical exit mechanisms is made. These utilize the model descriptions for the exit process presented in the accompanying article of Casey et al., employing data consisting of conversion as a function of time for the approach to steady state polymerization conditions. Experimental data are presented on the exit rate coefficients as a function of such experimental parameters as: particle size, monomer concentration, and aqueous-phase free-radical concentration for a series of styrene polymerizations at 50°C, where the average number of free radicals per particle (n̄) never exceeds 0.5. It is demonstrated for these systems that while the conversion/time dependence from a single run, under conditions sensitive to exit, is insensitive to mechanistic assumptions as to the fate of desorbed free radicals, the variation of the exit rate coefficient with particle size so obtained suggests a second order dependence on n̄, implying complete re-entry of desorbed free radicals under all conditions studied. Once the monomeric radicals have re-entered, they are more likely to remain inside the particle where they will either propagate or undergo termination rather than re-escape. The article also presents an estimate for the rate coefficient at 50°C of the first propagation step of the monomeric radical subsequent to transfer. The conclusions drawn here for seeded systems should prove useful for study of particle nucleation mechanisms, when exit is particularly likely in small, newly formed, particles. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: A theoretical treatment is given for fast, multiple bond-switching reactions, such as NO + NH2 → N2 + H2O. These reactions are characterized by all or most of the bonds being broken. The collision complex involved (whether long or short lived) is shown to be extremely anharmonic. Consideration of the master equation describing the competing processes of complex formation, internal rearrangement and collisional deactivation yields easily applied sufficient conditions for the recombination rate coefficient being independent of pressure.

    Notizen: Values for 〈ΔEdown〉, the average downward energy transferred from the reactant to the bath gas upon collision, have been obtained for highly vibrationally excited undeuterated and per-deuterated isopropyl bromide with the bath gases Ne, Xe, C2H4, and C2D4, at ca. 870 K. The technique of pressure-dependent very low-pressure pyrolysis (VLPP) was used to obtain the data. For C3H7Br, the 〈ΔEdown〉 values (cm-1) are 490 (Ne), 540 (Xe), 820 (C2H4), and 740 (C2D4), and for C3D7Br, 440 (Ne), 570 (Xe), 730 (C2H4), and 810 (C2D4). The uncertainties in these values are ca. ±10%. The 〈ΔEdown〉 values for the inert bath gases Ne and Xe show excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions of the semi-empirical biased random walk model for monatomic/substrate collisional energy exchange [J. Chem. Phys., 80, 5501 (1984)]. The relative effects of deuteration of the reactant molecule on 〈ΔEdown〉 also compare favorably with the predictions of this theoretical model. Extrapolated high-pressure rate coefficients (s-1) for the thermal decomposition of reactant are 1013.6±0.3 exp(-200 ± 8 kJ mol-1/RT) for C3H7Br and 1013.9±0.3 exp(-207 ± 8 kJ mol±1/RT) for C3D7Br, which are consistent with previous studies and the expected isotope effect.

    Notizen: It is shown that the master equation describing fall-off effects in unimolecular and recombination reactions, with angular momentum (J) conservation taken into account, can be solved exactly if the assumption is made that the probability of collisional energy transfer in J is independent of initial state; this assumption is shown to be physically acceptable (from general conservation considerations and from trajectory calculations) for typical neutral radical recombination and decomposition reactions. This leads to a J-averaged master equation which can be readily solved by standard means. Illustrative computations using this treatment are presented.

    Notizen: Changes in the magnitude of 〈ΔEdown〉, the average downward collisional energy transferred between a highly vibrationally excited reactant molecule and an inert bath gas, upon perdeuteration of the substrate are reported for tert-butyl bromide dilute in Ar, Kr, N2, and CO2. The technique of pressure-dependent very low-pressure pyrolysis (VLPP) was used to obtain the absolute values of 〈ΔEdown〉, which are for C4H9Br, 230 (Ar), 285 (Kr), 270 (N2), and 365 (CO2) while for C4D9Br, 200 (Ar), 250 (Kr), 220 (N2), and 335 (CO2), all in cm-1 at ca. 720 K. The estimated uncertainties in these values are ca. ± 10%. These observed 〈ΔEdown〉, values and trends found with results from this series of isotope studies, are compared with current theoretical models. Extrapolated high-pressure temperature-dependent rate coefficients (s-1) for the thermal decomposition of reactant are 1013.8±0.3 exp(-175 ± 8 kJ mol-1/RT) for C4H9Br and 1014.3±0.3 exp(-183 ± 8 kJ mol-1/RT) for C4D9Br. These results are in accord with other studies and the expected isotope effect.

    Notizen: A recently developed solution of the master equation for unimolecular and recombination reactions is extended to give new means for incorporating angular momentum (J) conservation in the fall-off regime for multichannel reactions. The calculated pressure dependence of a typical multichannel unimolecular dissociation reaction (thermal dissociation of 1-iodopropane) shows that if one of the channels has a transition state with a moment of inertia (I†) significantly different from that of the parent molecule (I) (e.g., a “simple-fission” type), neglect of angular momentum conservation causes the predicted branching ratio to be grossly in error at lower pressures. Specifically, if I† 〉 I the rate coefficient is underestimated whereas if I† 〈 I the rate coefficient is overestimated.

    Notizen: The thermal decomposition of cyclobutyl chloride has been investigated over the temperature range of 892-1150 K using the technique of very low-pressure pyrolysis (VLPP). The reaction proceeds via two competitive unimolecular channels, one to yield ethylene and vinyl chloride and the other to yield 1,3-butadiene and hydrogen chloride, with the latter being the major reaction under the experimental conditions. With the usual assumption that gas-wall collisions are «strong,» RRKM calculations, generalized to take into account two competing pathways, show that the experimental unimolecular rate constants are consistent with the high-pressure Arrhenius parameters given by log k1(sec-1) = (14.8 ± 0.3) - (61.1 ± 1.0)/Θ for vinyl chloride formation and log k2(sec-1) = (13.6 ± 0.3) - (55.7 ± 1.0)/Θ for 1,3-butadiene formation, where Θ = 2.303 RT kcal/mol. The A factors were assigned from previous high-pressure low-temperature data of other workers assuming a four-center transition state for 1,2-HCl elimination and a chlorine-bridged biradical transition state for vinyl chloride formation. The activation energies are in good agreement with the high-pressure results which were obtained with a conventional static system. The difference in critical energies is 4.6 kcal/mol.

    Notizen: The average downward energy transfer (〈Δ Edown〉) is obtained for highly vibrationally excited acetyl chloride with Ne and C2H4 bath gases at ca. 870 K. Data are obtained by the technique of very low-pressure pyrolysis (VLPP). Fitting these data by solution of the appropriate reaction-diffusion integrodifferential master equation yields the gas/gas collisional energy transfer parameters: 〈Δ Edown〉 values are 220 ± 10 cm-1 (Ne bath gas) and 330 ± 20 cm-1 (C2H4).These energy transfer quantities are much less than those predicted by statistical theories, or those observed for similar sized molecules such as CH3CH2Cl. These results are explained by the qualitative predictions of the biased random walk model wherein the fundamental mechanism of energy transfer is the multiple interactions between the bath gas and the individual atoms of the reactant molecule, during the course of the collision event. The charge distribution of acetyl chloride decreases the number of such interactions, thereby reducing the amount of energy transferred per collision.
