    Notes: Abstract The response to incompatible (self) pollination in rye (Secale cereale L.) includes the rapid deposition in the germinating pollen grain and pollen tube of a substance that stains with aniline blue, resorcin blue and calcofluor, and in these respects resembles callose. This substance has been isolated and analysed by acid hydrolysis and methylation as well as specific enzyme hydrolysis. It contains a glucan component with 1,4-β-glucosidic and 1,3-β-glucosidic linkages within the same linear chains. The proportion of 1,4-to 1,3-glucosidic linkages in the preparation is 77∶9.

    Notes: Abstract The identification, isolation and aminoterminal sequencing of two S-genotype-associated proteins from style extracts of Lycopersicon peruvianum Mill. is reported. There is a high level of homology between these two sequences and with the amino-terminal sequences of other S-allele-associated glycoproteins isolated from Nicotiana alata Link et Otto. These sequences were obtained by a new high-sensitivity method of selected twodimensional gel analysis followed by electroelution and purification of proteins by inverse-gradient high-performance liquid chromatography before sequencing.

    Notes: Abstract Several components of buffer extracts of Prunus avium L. styles (cv. Lambert, S 3 S 4) have been isolated and partially characterized: the major component is a glycoprotein (molecular weight approx. 90,000; 95% protein, 5.4% carbohydrate). A “sticky” uronic-acid-containing component and an arabinogalactan are also present. Two minor components are an antigenic glycoprotein associated with the self-incompatibility genotype (Antigen S) and a component found in styles of all Prunus species (Antigen P). The isolated glycoproteins have a substantial carbohydrate content (Antigen P 17.2%; Antigen S 16.3%), and have apparent molecular weights of 32,000 (Antigen P) and 37,000–39,000 (Antigen S). They are antigenically quite distinct. Material corresponding to Antigen S is secreted into the medium of suspension-cultured callus cells raised from both leaf and stem of P. avium.

    Notes: Abstract  We have identified a family of repetitive sequences in the genome of Nicotiana alata named Tna1 (Transposon of N. alata). The first element we characterised was on a genomic clone for the N. alata S6-ribonuclease (S6-RNase), a gene required for selfincompatibility in this species. The DNA sequence of this element resembles the integrase domain of retrotransposons of the gypsy class and is most similar to a retrotransposon from Lilium henryi. A transcript present in N. alata styles (self-incompatibility genotype S6S6) hybridized to Tna1 and accumulated in the style following either pollination or touching. This transcript was cloned from a cDNA library and was encoded by a second, partial Tna1 element. Neither the transcribed sequence nor the original Tna1 element contain an open reading frame or is likely to be able to transpose. The second element was mapped using a population of N. alata plants segregating for alleles of the self-incompatibility locus and is closely linked to the S6-allele. The Tna1 element is present in a number of Nicotiana species and appears to have been active at least twice during the evolution of this genus.
