Notes: Abstract The observation of a large number of particle trajectories in a transversi single wire HGMS has made possible the experimental determination of the critical capture radius. Both the trajectories and the capture radius were found to be in good agreement with calculated values obtained by numerical means using a laminar flow model.

Notes: Abstract The trajectories of para-and ferromagnetic particles with velocities between 0.04 and 2.5 cm s−1 have been investigated in an HGMS model system with axial configuration. A single-wire system has been observed by a TV system. The trajectories were compared with the ideal (inviscid flow) and laminar (viscous flow) model. The results agree with laminar flow model.

Description / Table of Contents: It is the aim of the investigations on a PBTP-glass-spherecomposite to get experimental well-founded informations about the state of stress in the polymer matrix of the composite. The used method was the x-ray-lattice strain-stress measurement. The result of the measurements is the proof of a 3-axial state of tension stress in the polymer matrix in the unloaded state as well as under an uniaxial tension load. The reason are differences in the elastic properties of the two components in this heterogenous built up composite.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion Fatigue of Coated Compressor Blade MaterialsDamage of compressor blades due to corrosion fatigue constitutes a substantial fraction of the observed stationary gas turbine failures. Dependent on environmental conditions and filtering, these blades in addition may be exposed to mechanical erosion. For corrosion fatigue protection, coatings have been used since many years. However, recently the earlier used NiCd coatings have been substituted to an increasing extent by inorganic coatings containing dispersed aluminum particles as manufactured e.g. by SermeTel. Such coatings are designed to warrant improved corrosion resistance. Within the scope of a joint research project of the German gas turbine manufacturers AEG KANIS, BBC and KWU, some of these protective coatings were tested under simulated operating conditions in different corrosive media with respect to their corrosion fatigue protection capabilities. As a result, it was shown that the aluminum dispersed coatings offer good protection against corrosion in aqueous neutral media at room temperature. One of the coatings tested guarantees in strongly acidious media only a time-limited corrosion protection. At elevated temperatures and also after erosive pre-damage, the fatigue strengths are reduced heavily. In comparison with uncoated specimens, galvanically or chemically deposited nickel-coatings, which were tested concurrently, improved the corrosion resistance only unessentially.

Description / Table of Contents: Structure efficiency relationships of corrosion inhibitors for oil and gas productionStructure efficiency relationships for quarternary ammonium compounds as corrosion inhibitors for oil and gas production were investigated in the system mild steel/aqueous NaCl solution (5 weight%, CO2 saturated) at T = 298 K and T = 343 K by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and weight loss measurements. In-situ EIS measurements rapidly gave relatively accurate results on differential inhibitor efficiencies. Composition, thickness and inhibitor content of the inhomogeneous 3-D protecting layers formed on highly pure iron surfaces were determined by XPS measurements. The inhibition mechanism of the inhibitor used could be determined by its distribution within the 3-D protecting surface layer and is interpreted in terms of the interphase inhibition concept.

Notes: The cycloaddition of allyl cations to conjugated dienes offers an efficient and general tool for the construction of seven-membered carbocycles. The silver salt route is highly suitable for generating allyl cations and can be used even in most difficult cases, i. e. for elusive and intractable allyl cations such as 2-methylallyl, 2-methoxyallyl, and the parent allyl cation. Cycloadditions to the 2-methoxyallyl cation come very close to the prototype of a 6π, 7C reaction, since the carbonyl group introduced into the new ring can either be used for further transformations or be removed altogether. The combination of an allyl cation with π reactants, especially conjugated dienes, is a powerful and strongly convergent synthetic method since it permits one-step assembly, from a C3 and a C4 unit, of a cluster of up to four chiral centers in a ring which is larger than six-membered. Allyl cations combine with electron-rich 2π systems to form novel five-membered rings. The nature of the organometallic intermediates has been elucidated in many cases.

Notes: The reaction of allyl cations and 1,3-dienes affords seven-, five-, and six -membered rings as well as products of electrophilic substitution and linear 1:1-adducts. In this review article, preparative and mechanistic advances are summarized with special emphasis on the synthesis of seven-membered carbocycles. For the first time, a comprehensive mechanistic description is presented: Three classes A, B, and C correlate product type and stereochemistry with the nucleophilicity of the diene, the electrophilicity of the allyl cation intermediate, and the donor capacity of the group Y attached to the central carbon of the allylic moiety. The problem “allylic resonance versus nucleophilic participation of Y” is discussed and experimental evidence is adduced for some participation of Y as a function of its nucleophilicity. For cyclopentenyl cations, enhanced charge separation and electrophilicity are postulated, even when Y is a good donor, due to the structurally enforced polarity of the π-allyl system.
