Notes: Basal plane electrical resistivity measurements on single crystals of barium ferrite (BaM) are reported as a function of temperature. The room temperature resistivity increases by an order of magnitude over the "as grown'' value after thermal cycling to 1200 °C. In addition, a sharp change in slope above room temperature is observed in a plot of log(ρ) vs 1/T. These results are consistent with a model in which the carrier concentration undergoes an extrinsic to intrinsic transformation upon heating. The activation energy in the intrinsic regime is 1.1 eV, the largest value reported for BaM. An extrapolation from the high temperature data suggests that the room temperature intrinsic resistivity of single crystalline BaM is greater than 1014 Ω cm.

Notes: In the rotating gradient experiment (RGE), a magnetic bubble moves continuously in a circular trajectory, and vertical Bloch lines (VBL) are generated from Bloch curves (BC) when field gradients are increased. Three samples, from the same wafer, are studied by means of the RGE. Two of the three samples have been ion implanted at 200 keV with Ne+ at 1 and 2×1014 atoms/cm2. The dynamic transitions and the bubble states, winding number (S), and the dimensionless momentum (p) are investigated for the implanted and unimplanted samples. Changes in S and p are observed in the unimplanted sample, but only p can be modified in the implanted films. The experimental data gives evidence that the value of p always increases by two after each of the dynamic transitions in the implanted samples. Also, changes (Δp) in the value of p, in the intermediate region between transitions, are a result of an increase in the size of the BCs. The increase in resistance to growth and punch-through of BCs, and to translation of VBLs is found to cause the velocity and Δp of implanted films to increasse further in the region between transitions. The bubble trajectories in the unimplanted and lightly implanted samples form circles for all bubble states observed. However, the heavily implanted sample exhibits an elliptical trajectory because the bubble translational velocity changes with position as a result of an in-plane anisotropy. The ratio of the major to the minor axes is sometimes larger than 2.

Notes: The magnetic field dependence of the surface acoustic wave (SAW) attenuation in magnetic bubble garnet films has been experimentally investigated. SAW delay lines have been fabricated on magnetic bubble garnet films. Interdigital transducers on a piezoelectric layer (zinc oxide film sputtered on top of the garnet film) have been used for acoustic wave generation and detection. Results of the attenuation measurements for different magnetic field orientations with respect to the SAW propagation direction are presented. The maximum increase in the SAW attenuation was observed when the applied dc magnetic field H was parallel to the surface wave propagation vector k. Minimum change in the SAW attenuation was observed when the magnetic field was applied perpendicular to k.

Notes: Abstract A model for the description of saturation buildup curves on single-capture elements is presented. It avoids the principal difficulties connected with the so-called SEB model in the case of the transverse HGMS-geometry. The basic idea of this model consists of the “linking” of the normal and tangential components of the forces acting at the buildup surface by a force of static friction. In contrast to the SEB-model the fact that the saturation buildup surface is neither circular nor concentric with the cross section of the capture element is taken into account. After evaluating two sets of experimental data and calculating the coefficient of static frictionf the “model of static friction” is submitted to a first examination. Within the accuracy of these preliminary measurements and even with an approximate evaluation of the fluid drag force the usefulness of the proposed method is established.

Notes: Abstract The observation of a large number of particle trajectories in a transversi single wire HGMS has made possible the experimental determination of the critical capture radius. Both the trajectories and the capture radius were found to be in good agreement with calculated values obtained by numerical means using a laminar flow model.

Notes: Abstract An experimental investigation of particle accumulation on a single wire in the transverse HGMS configuration is presented. For saturation buildup we obtain a monotonic decrease of the coefficient of static frictionf sat with the flow velocityv a on the basis of the “friction model”. The power law of the dependence of the saturation accumulation area onv a , predicted by this model, is experimentally verified. Furthermore, we present an empirical law describing the dependence of the accumulation area on timeτ and on flow velocityv a for the entire buildup process. From the investigation of the initial accumulation we conclude that existing theories of the so-called capture radius do not satisfactorily describe the situation near the end of a capture wire.

Notes: Abstract A numerical solution for the Navier-Stokes equation is obtained for the flow conditions in an ordered high-gradient magnetic filter. Hence, capture efficiencies are calculated for this filter operated in the transverse configuration, with field, flow, and collector-wire axis mutually perpendicular. Good agreement with experiment is obtained over a wide range of filter parameters. Comparisons are made with results obtained by other models.
