    Notizen: Abstract Design validation for embedded arrays remains as a challenging problem in today's microprocessor design environment. Although several methods for validating embedded arrays have been proposed, not much has been done to characterize the strengths and weaknesses of these methods. This paper provides a comprehensive study of various design validation approaches adopted at the Somerset PowerPC Design Center in the past, including methods from both formal verification and test generation. Effectiveness of these approaches will be measured based on automatic design error injection and simulation at both gate and transistor levels. Experience of using different validation approaches on recent PowerPC microprocessor arrays will be analyzed and discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract Test and validation of embedded array blocks remains a major challenge in today's microprocessor design environment. The difficulty comes from twofold, the sizes of the arrays and the complexity of their timing and control. This paper describes a novel test generation methodology for test and validation of microprocessor embedded arrays. Unlike traditional ATPG methods, our test generation method is based upon the high-level assertion specification which is originally used for the purpose of formal verification. The superiority of these assertion tests over the traditional ATPG tests will be discussed and shown through various experiments on recent PowerPC microprocessor designs.

    Notizen: The production of carbon clusters (but not fullerenes) from coal-derived material by the use of laser desorption mass spectrometry is described. Benzo(e)pyrene, a standard polynuclear hydrocarbon found in coal tars, also gave carbon clusters despite using low laser power to avoid pyrolysis of target molecules. Positive- and negative-ion spectra of the standard included carbon clusters. These clusters are formed by the laser energy and can be confused with aromatic hydrocarbons of the same nominal masses. They have no relevance for studies of coal structure.

    Notizen: The use of a laser-desorption mass spectrometer to examine a coal liquefaction extract known to contain high-molecular-mass material (from size-exclusion chromatography) has shown the presence of components of molecular mass in excess of 104Da for the first time. The molecules detected differ from each other in molecular mass by a few hundred or a few thousand Da. These preliminary results indicate that the basic coal-structure molecules probably consist of aromatic clusters on a chin, in reasonable agreement with current theories of coal structure.

    Notizen: A new method to prepare functionalized polyethylene involving borane intermediates and transition metal catalysts is described. Two processes, direct and post polymerizations, were employed to prepare borane-containing polyethylene (PE-B), which can be transformed to functionalized polyethylene (LLDPE-f) with various functional groups, such as —BR2, —OH, —NH2, —OSi(CH3)3. In the direct process, the PE-B copolymers were prepared in one step by copolymerization of ethylene with a borane monomer (ω-borane-α-olefin). The post polymerization process requires two steps: copolymerization of ethylene and 1,4-hexadiene, and subsequential hydroboration reaction of unsaturated PE. Three transition metal catalysts, including two homogeneous metallocene (Cp2ZrCl2 [bis(cyclopentadienyl) zirconium dichloride] and Et(Ind)2ZrCl2 [1,1′-ethylenedi-η5-indenyl-zirconium dichloride] with MAO (methylaluminoxane)) and one heterogeneous (TiCl3·AA/Et2AlCl) ones, were studied in the copolymerization reactions. The single site Et(Ind)2ZrCl2/MAO homogeneous catalyst, with a strained ligand geometry and opened active site, is by far the most effective system in the incorporation of high olefins into polyethylene structures.

    Notizen: Molecular masses up to 270 000 u have been observed during matrix-assisted laser desorption mass spectroscopy on a sample of bituminous coal; the major fraction of desorbed ions appeared between m/z values of 800 and 5000. Similar mass distributions have been found in a coal-liquefaction extract and a pyrolysis tar. The highest molecular masses identified in this work far exceed previously reported high molecular masses found in coal-derived products (12 000 u), which were also detected by laser-desorption mass spectrometry.

    Notizen: A series of polydimethylsiloxane-urea acrylate prepolymers was synthesized by reacting aminopropyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (ATPS) with isocyanatoethyl methacrylate (IEM). The oligomers were cured using ultraviolet radiation in the presence of different reactive diluents. Three systems were prepared with varying ATPS soft segment molecular weight. All of the samples were transparent. However, microphase separation was indicated by the observation of two glass transition temperatures attributed to separate ATPS and IEM/reactive diluent phases. Increasing ATPS molecular weight led to a lower rubbery phase transition temperature and a smaller rigid phase volume fraction. These effects were reflected in lower modulus and tensile strength at room temperature, and higher elongation at break. An increase in the reactive diluent content resulted in an increase in Young's modulus and the ultimate tensile strength of these materials. Increasing reactive diluent content caused the rubbery phase transition peak to decrease in magnitude without changing its position and shifted the hard segment transition to higher temperature. The tensile strengths and moduli of these materials were higher than those reported in the literature for other polydimethylsiloxane and urethane acrylate materials.

    Notizen: In vivo and electron microscopy were used to study the hepatocellular responses of rat livers to intravenously injected polymeric microspheres. Two microsphere preparation with different surface characteristics and degradability were used in this study. In vivo microscopy revealed that both poly(benzyl L-glutamate) (PBLG) and poly(hydroxypropyl L-glutamine) (PHPG) microspheres caused disturbance in the microcirculation of rat liver up to 2 months after injection. The observed changes included stagnant flow and adherence of white blood cells to the endothelial lining of venules and sinusoids. Kupffer cell (KC) activation following phagocytosis of microspheres was evidenced by the enlargement of KCs and increased number of KCs taking up fluorescent latex particles. Electron microscopy of rat livers revealed a wide range of hepatocellular injury associated with the administration of PBLG and PHPG microspheres. These results indicate that a small amount of remaining microspheres is sufficient to induce continuous disturbance to hepatic microcirculation and that particulate drug carriers should be designed to be rapidly degraded so that the return to normal liver function is possible. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: Thermomechanical degradation, as a result of mixing at 175°C during the preparation of polystyrene composites containing monodisperse (0.45μm) crosslinked polystyrene beads, often leads to a uniform decrease in rheological properties on increasing the concentration or on reducing the crosslink density of the beads. The extent of such degradation depends on the molecular weight of polystyrene and on the crosslink density of the polystyrene beads. Scission fragments from decomposed beads may induce free radical degradation of the polystyrene matrix. Degradation during mixing of the beads and the matrix is suppressed by mixing crosslinked beads in a polystyrene solution, and removing the solvent, or by melt mixing after adding 0.2% BHT. Polystyrene beads and composites show thermally induced weight loss on heating above 330°C in nitrogen or above 250°C in air. Networks of increased crosslink density are of enhanced thermal stability on heating in the absence of shear.

    Notizen: A series of segmented polyurea urethane and polyurea block copolymers based on a hexane diisocyanate (HDI) modified aminopropyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane soft segment was synthesized. The hard segments consisted of 4,4′-methylene diphenylene diisocyanate (MDI) which was chain extended with 1,4-butanediol (BD), N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), or ethylene diamine. Zwitterionomers were prepared by quaternizing the tertiary amine of the MDEA extended material with γ-propane sultone. The effect of chemical structure on the extent of phase separation and physical properties was studied using a variety of techniques including thermal analysis, dynamic mechanical spectroscopy, tensile testing, and small-angle x-ray scattering. It was observed that the compatibility between the nonpolar polydimethylsiloxane soft segments and the polar urethane hard segments was improved by inserting HDI linkages into the polydimethylsiloxane soft segments. The aggregation of hard segments was enhanced by increasing hard-segment content or by the introduction of ionic functionality. The tensile strength and modulus of these materials was higher than those of polyurethanes containing soft segments based on polydimethylsiloxane and its derivatives.
