    Notes: The application of a silicon-on-insulator substrate in a high-power integrated circuit is limited by the self-heating effect, caused by the poor thermal conductivity of the buried SiO2. We introduce tetrahedral amorphous-carbon thin films, formed by the filtered arc deposition method, as an alteration. We investigated the surface morphology, microstructure, and electrical properties of these films. The films deposited under a substrate bias of −200 V displayed outstanding surface topography (low surface roughness with the Rrms value under 0.5 nm) and excellent electrical property (breakdown field of 4.7 MV/cm). The film has a high content of sp3 bonds of carbon (87%) and low content of oxygen (〈2%). © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Rapid prototyping has gained wide industrial acceptance in recent years. Its main advantage is that it improves the “time to market” and the design quality of a product. Most rapid prototyping processes have to build the solid volume layer by layer. The tracing of the cross-sectional area in each layer is the most time-consuming step. The process can be speeded up if the material volume to be traced can be reduced by extracting some empty volumes in the original solid. However, the hollow solid generated by employing the negative solid offset technique is subject to the problem of no interior support. In this paper, a sub-boundary octree approach of generating thin shell solids with reinforced interior structuring is proposed. The procedures to generate a reinforced thin shell solid are studied. Various testing models are produced by a fused deposition modelling rapid prototyper and the results are supportive.

    Notes: A new method to prepare functionalized polyethylene involving borane intermediates and transition metal catalysts is described. Two processes, direct and post polymerizations, were employed to prepare borane-containing polyethylene (PE-B), which can be transformed to functionalized polyethylene (LLDPE-f) with various functional groups, such as —BR2, —OH, —NH2, —OSi(CH3)3. In the direct process, the PE-B copolymers were prepared in one step by copolymerization of ethylene with a borane monomer (ω-borane-α-olefin). The post polymerization process requires two steps: copolymerization of ethylene and 1,4-hexadiene, and subsequential hydroboration reaction of unsaturated PE. Three transition metal catalysts, including two homogeneous metallocene (Cp2ZrCl2 [bis(cyclopentadienyl) zirconium dichloride] and Et(Ind)2ZrCl2 [1,1′-ethylenedi-η5-indenyl-zirconium dichloride] with MAO (methylaluminoxane)) and one heterogeneous (TiCl3·AA/Et2AlCl) ones, were studied in the copolymerization reactions. The single site Et(Ind)2ZrCl2/MAO homogeneous catalyst, with a strained ligand geometry and opened active site, is by far the most effective system in the incorporation of high olefins into polyethylene structures.

    Notes: New parallel software for the analysis of coupled heat and moisture transfer in unsaturated soil is developed. The model, written in a two-dimensional polar co-ordinate formulation, is based on a finite difference self-implicit method. The code is programmed in FORTRAN with message passing libraries PARMACS and executed on a ‘Paramid’ parallel supercomputer. The validity of the parallel code by comparison of simulation results with experimentally measured values obtained from a laboratory heating experiment is examined. An assessment of the algorithm's performance on a large network of processors is also explored. It was found that the simulation results compared very well with the experimental measurements. The efficiency of the parallel code was also revealed leading to the conclusion that the algorithm was highly efficient in nature. The new parallel code was also found to be more efficient when dealing with larger problems requiring more finite difference nodal points, on a larger network of processors.

    Notes: The cells responsible for the long-term in vitro generation of murine mast cells have been examined. Sequential analysis of all colony types obtained from cultures of spleen or bone marrow cells showed that only colonies derived from multipotential cells (mixed-erythroid colonies) or mast cell progenitors, contained cells responsible for mast cell generation in liquid cultures. Primary colony growth and subsequent maintenance of mast cells in liquid cultures was dependent upon pokeweed mitogen-stimulated spleen cell-conditioned medium (SCM). Mixed-erythroid colonies from 14-day cultures of spleen cells had the greatest capacity for mast cell generation. Analysis by clone splitting and transfer to high (20%) and low (2.5%) concentrations of SCM showed that the concentration of SCM used in either the primary colony culture or subsequent liquid culture phase altered both the proliferative capacity of the mast cells generated and the frequency of mast cell progenitors within individual mixed-erythroid colonies. Thus, mixed-erythroid colonies stimulated with 2.5% SCM contained the highest proportion of mast cell progenitors (34% of colonies) and when stimulated with 20% SCM, approximately fourfold higher numbers of mast cells were produced at weekly intervals from liquid cultures maintained in 2.5% SCM compared to parallel liquid cultures containing 20% SCM. These studies confirm the hemopoietic origin of mast cells and demonstrate that a factor(s) in SCM is able to modulate their proliferative potential.
