Notizen: Abstract Chemical analyses of three species in the Neotropical ant genusMegalomyrmex have identified this taxon as the third myrmicine genus to produce alkaloids as major venom products. Workers ofM. leoninus and workers and ergatoids ofM. goeldii produce one or more of fourtrans-2,5-dialkylpyrrolidines previously identified in other myrmicine genera.M. modestus, on the other hand, is distinctive in producing the novel alkaloid (5E,8E)-3-butyl-5-hexylpyrrolizidine (5d), whose structure was established using a micro-Hofmann degradation sequence. The relationship ofMegalomyrmex to other alkaloid-producing ant genera is discussed along with the possible chemotaxonomic significance of the analyzed species when viewed in terms of the recognized species groups in this genus.

Notizen: Abstract Chemical analysis of the venom of the myrmicine antMegalomyrmex foreli from Costa Rica revealed the presence of four major alkaloidal components. Two of these, 2-butyl-5-(E, 1-heptenyl)-5-pyrroline (3) and 2-butyl-5-(E, E, 1,3-heptadienyl)-5-pyrroline (4), constitute a new functional class of ant venom alkaloids, whose structures were assigned from their spectral and chemical behavior and unambiguous syntheses. The function of these compounds is suggested by field observations of the behavior ofM. foreli, its sting morphology, and the relative toxicity of 3 and 4 against termite workers.

Notizen: The effects of 0.1 wt% Ce in both metal and oxide form on the high temperature oxidation of Fe-Cr (Cr = 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20) have been investigated at 1000°C in a 0.1315 bar O2/He mixture at a total pressure of 1 bar. The presence of Ce and CeO2 markedly affects the oxidation characteristics of the tested alloys, causing rapid initial coverage with protective oxide, decreased overall rates of oxidation, modifications in scale morphologies and enhanced scale adhesion. There is a possibility of a “trade-off” between the amount of Cr in the Fe-Cr materials and the presence of Ce of CeO2, since such additions have been shown to decrease the amount of Cr necessary to form a protective Cr2O3 scale on the alloy surface. The mechanisms by which the Ce or CeO2 improve the oxidation behaviour of Fe-Cr alloys are discussed.

Notizen: The ferrous iron-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid-hydrogen peroxide-initiated emulsion polymerization of styrene has been investigated, potassium palmitate being used as emulsifying agent. It was found that there was acritical concentration of iron, 0.01 part of ferrous iron per 100 parts of monomer, above which the zero-order rate of polymerization was not appreciably increased. The rate is also proportional to the square root of the hydrogen peroxide concentration and to the soap concentration to the 0.6 power.

Notizen: The polyaminocarboxylic acids, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), methylethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (MeEDTA), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), and cyclohexanediaminetetraacetic acid (CDTA) have been used to chelate the iron in the system ferrous iron-hydrogen peroxide when it is used as an initiator for the emulsion polymerization of styrene. In each case, the zero-order rate of polymerization decreased from pH 0.5, when it was identical to that in the absence of any chelating agent, to a minimum value in the pH region 3.5-6.5, after which it rose again. In acid solution the results are not the same as those anticipated from the redox potentials of the ferrous-ferric-chelating agent system at various pH values, and this has been found to be due to the dissociation of the iron chelate at a low pH.

Notizen: A review is presented of the gaseous combustion and pyrolysis products evolved from coal, wood and PVC. Information has been collated on the range of products evolved, the temperatures of evolution and the effect of different ambient conditions (e.g. oxidizing of inert conditions). The data for coal have been subdivided into those from which rates of gas evolution have been or can be derived and those from which this is not possible. Probable decomposition routes for PVC and for wood are discussed. Although all three materials have been widely studied, the correlation between the work of different authors in not always good. The data obtained are dependent on the form of the experiment, and there are gaps in the information available, especially information on the rates of evolution of products of products as a function of temperature.

Notizen: The performance of zine oxide gas large-scale experiments in an experimental underground mine roadway has been investigated. The sensors were in a simple prototype instrument and the response to products evolved from heated coal wood and PVC conveyor belt was determined. The response was measured as a function of sensor distancef from the combustion products, the ventilation rate in the roadway and the mass of coal dust used. Limited analuysis of the roadway air was also carried out. The results are compared with those obtained in laboratory studies1 and suggest that the sensors respond mainly to inorganic gases, e.g. CO, H2, H2S, HCl, and in the case of wood, acetic vapour at concentrations of about 1ppm. The experiments confirm the potential of the sensors as a means of detecting heating involving coal, wood and PVC conveyor belt.

Notizen: Storage stability of an aqueous phenolic dispersion resin has been studied by accelerated methods with chemical kinetics and centrifugation. The activation energy of the resin advancement reaction was 25.6 kcal/g mole. Results indicate that the chemical and physical properties of the dispersion resin do not change significantly in a storage period of 4.5 months under normal conditions (25°C). Under refrigeration (4°C) the product is stable indefinitely for all practical purposes.

Notizen: An analysis, using gas chromatography and gas chromatography-linked mass spectroscopy, of the major products evolved as a function of temperature from coal, wood and PVC conveyor belting is described. The effect of these products, both collectively and as individual species, on the electrical properties of zinc oxide gas sensors has been investigated: the conductance of the sensors was measured in air containing either the total products evolved from the heated materials or the individual products eluted from a gas chromatographic column. Thus, the products from the different materials which make up the total zinc oxide gas sensor response at different material temperatures were identified. For coal dust heated in air the sensors responded to aromatic hydrocarbons H2 and CO, which were evolved between 100° and 200°C. For coal heated in nitrogen the sensors responded to the aromatic hydrocarbons evolved between 100° and 170°C. For PVC conveyor belt heated in air, the low temperature response was to the low levels of HCl evolved below 200°C. Finally, for hardwood dust heated in air the sensors responded primarily to the acid vapour evolved between 170° and 200°C.
