    Notizen: Summary Two polypeptides, OCP-I and OCP-II, specific to the organ of Corti of the guinea pig and the rat, were detected by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. They were neither present in other inner ear structures, nor in other organs tested. The two polypeptides constitute a substantial portion of the total protein of the organ of Corti. Both inner and outer layer of the organ of Corti contained approximately equal amounts of OCP-I and OCP-II. The molecular weights of OCP-I and OCP-II are 37,000 and 22,500 daltons, respectively. The corresponding pI values are 4.9 and 5.1, respectively. In addition, actin and tubulin were detected in both layers of the organ of Corti.

    Notizen: A very sensitive NMR method has been developed for measuring deuterated water bound to proteins suspended in nonpolar solvents. This has been used to determine the amount of bound water as a function of water activity for subtilisin Carlsberg suspended in hexane, benzene, and toluene and for α-chymotrypsin in hexane. The adsorption isotherms for subtilisin in the three solvents are very similar showing that water activity can be usefully employed to predict the amount of water bound to proteins in nonpolar organic media. Comparison of the degree of enzyme hydration reached in nonpolar solvents with that obtained in air shows that adsorption of strongly bound water is hardly affected by the low dielectric medium, but adsorption of loosely bound water is significantly reduced. This suggests that the hydrophobic regions of the protein surface are preferentially solvated by solvent molecules, and that in a nonpolar environment formation of a complete monolayer of water over the protein surface is thermodynamically unfavorable. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: An investigation was conducted to determine the general physical characteristics of self-curing acrylic resin systems in terms of their potential utilization in total hip arthroplasty.Exothermic temperature, working and setting times were monitored with thermocouples placed in acrylic masses insulated via a Teflon mold. Mechanical strengths were run in an Instron testing machine. The same trends were noted in all systems studied.As thickness or mass increased, the maximum temperature and the setting time increased. As the powder to liquid ratio increased (thereby relatively less liquid), the maximum temperature, set times and dough times decreased, while the working time was essentially unaffected. As the ambient temperature decreased, the maximum temperature decreased while the dough, working and setting times increased.The mechanical strengths of the systems cured at one atmosphere are low compared to high temperature and pressure curing. Flowability of the materials decreases quickly as final set time is approached.Although trends are similar in many self-curing acylic systems minors shifts in complex proprietary compositions can produce a wide span or working and setting times. Because the surgical team controls such parameters as the mass employed, the amount of liquid introduced, and the ambient temperature it is important that they continuously re-evaluate their handling procedures particularly if new acrylic cements would be introduced.

    Notizen: The experiment was designed to investigate the in vitro corrosion of several modern dental amalgams in saline solution over a six-month period by measuring changes in the soluble corrosion products. Based on the change of the electrical conductivity of the solution, the dissolution rate seemed to decrease gradually for the first three to four months. Then a rapid increase was observed, indicating a reactivated corrosion process. Larger dissolutions of copper and mercury were observed, especially for the high copper alloys, in these later stages. Zinc and indium, if present, were preferentially released at the earlier stages. Silver and tin could not be detected. Evidence exists that the corrosion of tin results in insoluble deposits of corrosion products.

    Notizen: A series of microfilled resin composites were formulated by incrementally mixing either agglomerated 20 nm or unagglomerated 50 nm silica microfillers into monomers composed of diphenyloxymethacrylate and TEGDMA. The microfiller particles were prepared with and without a γ-methacryloxypropyl-trimethoxy silane coupling agent. Following polymerization, five material properties were tested: uniaxial tensile strength, Young's modulus in slow compression, Knoop hardness, water sorption, and toothbrush abrasion resistance. Results from these tests indicated that microfiller content clearly was the most influential parameter affecting material property performance. Composites containing 20 nm particles demonstrated greater water sorption, higher Knoop hardness, and better resistance to toothbrush wear. Surprisingly, the application of silane to microfiller surfaces did not greatly improve composite performance for most of the material properties tested in this study. However, water sorption behavior over a 3-year period was observed to be more stable for materials possessing silane-treated particles.     Notizen: Seven mechanical/physical properties were used to evaluate 10 unfilled resins: eight aromatic dimethacrylates and two urethane dimethacrylates. Physical property tests included compressive strength, Young's modulus in compression, uniaxial tensile strength, intrinsic yield point, toothbrush abrasion, Knoop hardness, and water sorption. Controlled changes were made in the following four material parameters: amount of crosslinking diluent present in the uncured monomer, functionality of the monomer, repeat unit chemistry of the monomer (urethane vs. aromatic structure) and mode of activation (chemical vs. visible light). Polymers containing a high concentration of crosslinking agent (50 wt%) were found to be tougher and to possess lower hardness than materials containing lesser amounts of crosslinking agent. This was attributed to the flexible nature of the triethylene glycol dimethacrylate crosslinking molecule. Exposure to water plasticized the highly crosslinked materials to the degree that the yield point and elastic modulus were effectively lowered. Most of the tested properties were unaffected by differences in functionality except resistance to toothbrush abrasion, which was enhanced for polymers derived from high functionality monomers. The urethane-based polymers sorbed substantially more water than the aromatic-based materials, which presumably resulted in lower values for surface hardness. However, the urethane resins were very tough, and excellent resistance to toothbrush abrasion was observed. Property differences caused by differences in activation mode were small, although the visible light materials did sorb more water. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
