Notes: The batch synthesis of acetylacetone end-capped polydimethylsiloxane is described. Efforts to end-link the telechelic polymer with several simple metal salts yielded poorly gelled systems, except for the cases where FeCl3 and CrCl3 · 3THF were used. With these salts, low but nonetheless appreciable, gel fractions of 45 and 40%, respectively, were obtained. The difficulty experienced in obtaining high gel fractions is traced to incomplete ligand exchange reactions in low polarity media.

Notes: The ability of near-infrared (NIR) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy to characterize reaction-injection-molded (RIM) polyurethane elastomers is demonstrated. The advantage of NIR spectroscopy over other analytical methods is its ability to analyze samples without any preparation. In this work, the specific effects of composition, density, phase separation, and moisture content on the NIR spectra of the polymers are identified. In addition, the ability of NIR spectroscopy to make rapid assessments of physical properties, such as heat sag and flex modulus, is demonstrated. In order to perform these analyses, the multivariate statistical methods of principal components analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS) are used.

Notes: An expression for the angular dependence of the intensity of radiation scattered from six ellipsoids of revolution arranged in D6h symmetry is obtained. The scattering functions exhibit unique plateau regions for small angles. This peculiar feature of the scattering functions for aggregates may be of some aid in detecting a hole in globular proteins and in refining shape analyses of aggregated globular proteins.

Notes: Simulations of the simultaneous crosslinking and chain scission reactions that are induced in bulk amorphous polyethylene by irradiation have been implemented with a computer. A detailed study of the various defect structures in the network is reported, to show that dangling ends have the highest population among these defects, especially at higher crosslink densities. The calculated sol fractions compare very favorably with previously published experimental studies. We find that there is about 1 chain scission for every 9 crosslinked units, i.e., one scission per 4.5 crosslinks. This is fewer scissions than had previously been deduced by application of the Charlesby-Pinner method.

Notes: The hexamer of phycocyanin from Phormidium luridum has been isolated and purified by ammonium sulfate fractionation and gel chromatography. The protein is characterized by the sedimentation constant S°20, w = 10.2S, the diffusion coefficient D20, w = 4.73 × 10-7 cm2/sec, and intrinsic viscosity [η] = 3.89 ml/g. The molecular weight of the aggregate is 209,000. The shape and dimensions of the hexamer are discussed in terms of a model consisting of subunits arranged with C6 symmetry. The monomers, assumed to be spherical, are found to have a radius of 22 Å, and the diameter across the hexamer is 132 Å. The latter figure agrees closely with dimensions observed in electron micrographs.

Notes: Fragmented and mitomycin C cross-linked E. coli DNA was fractionated according to base composition by means of hydroxylapatite chromatography and density-gradient centrifugation in order to determine the effect of compositional heterogeneity on the breadth of the helix-coil transition. The transitions of some of the fractions are broader than that of the unfractionated DNA, due, presumably, to nonrandom sequences in molecules of 5 × 105 daltons. Analysis of the transition breadths in terms of the known heterogeneity leads to reconsideration of current DNA helix-coil transition theory. We propose that partially denatured states include those for which the chains do not remain in strict register. Denaturation profiles are comprehensible only if this multitude of entropically favorable, degenerate states is included in the theory.

Notes: The stress-strain relation is analyzed in terms of the gyration tensor \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$S^{\alpha \beta } = N^{ - 1} \sum\limits_{i - 1}^N {x_i^\alpha x_i^\beta } $$\end{document} where the sum is over all N atomic groups comprising the elastomeric material. All groups are taken for convenience to have the same mass. This tensor is linear in the strain, and furthermore it may be evaluated from a configuration integral. The definition of the strain by use of Sαβ gives new insight into the connection between statistical and continuum mechanics, and further clarifies the significance of “affine deformation.” Stress components are obtained as derivatives of the (Helmholtz) free energy A with respect to the invariants of Sαβ. The first invariant is just the radius of gyration S2 of the network, and the dependence of A on S2 alone provides a basis for analysis of stress-strain isotherms.

    Notes: Vapor sorption measurements of Flory-Huggins interaction parameters χ for three poly(styrene-co-butadiene) + solvent systems at 25°C are reported. For Philprene 1502 + benzene: χ = 0.379-0.297 v22; for Philprene 1502 + n-heptane: χ = 0.595 + 0.030 v2 for Solprene 1204 + benzene: χ = 0.516-0.026 v2. The volume for fractions of polymer v2 range from ca. 0.4 to 0.9.
