Notizen: Abstract Poly(dimethylsiloxane)-SiO2 organic-inorganic hybrid networks were synthesized by a two-step, catalyst-free sol-gel process. Reactive PSX (polydimethylsiloxane) oligomers with methoxysilyl end-groups were used as the organic component, and tetramethylorthosilicate (TMOS) as the inorganic component of the hybrid. Our studies show that uncatalyzed sol-gel reactions based on TMOS can reach gelation in 7.5 h when reacted at room temperature, with a stoichiometric amount of water necessary for complete hydrolysis in the initial stages, and at a high concentration of reacting species. The relatively neutral reaction environment of this catalyst-free process is important in the synthesis of PSX-SiO2 hybrid networks because it prevents redistribution reactions of PSX modifiers, especially when higher temperatures are used for the drying of the gels. The PSX-SiO2 hybrid networks have reduced polarity, increased water resistance, and improved toughness compared to inorganic SiO2 networks produced under similar conditions.

Notizen: High Tg polyimides containing pendant phenolic hydroxyl groups were synthesized in high molecular weight via one-step solution polymerization of the dihydrochloride salt of 4,6-diaminoresorcinol with various commercially available dianhydrides. Polymerization proceeds via initial dissociation of diaminoresorcinol dihydrochloride to hydrogen chloride gas and diaminoresorcinol, followed by rapid dissolution of diaminoresorcinol and polymerization with the dianhydride monomer to afford soluble, fully-cyclized polyimide. The resulting poly(hydroxy-imide)s, which contain two phenolic hydroxyl groups per repeat unit, were soluble in amide solvents and dilute aqueous bases, displayed reasonably high glass transition temperatures and a high degree of water uptake. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: New strategies for the synthesis of perfectly alternating segmented polyimide-polydimethyl siloxane copolymers were developed by utilizing a transimidization method. Imide oligomers endcapped with 2-aminopyrimidine were reacted with aminopropyl terminated (dimethyl siloxane) oligomers to afford perfectly alternating segmented imide siloxane copolymers. The polymerization was conducted in solvents such as chlorobenzene and chlorofrom. High molecular weight, fully imidized perfectly alternating segmented imide siloxane copolymers were obtained within 2 h at temperatures of 60-110°C. The mechanism of the reaction was further elucidated via model compounds and NMR characterization. The block copolymers exhibited two Tgs due to the microphase separation of the polyimide and polysiloxane phases. The Tg of the polyimide phase was a function of the length of the polyimide block. However, partial phase mixing was also evident from the DSC results on the imide siloxane copolymers prepared with low molecular weight polyimide segments. Thermooxidative stability and tensile properties of the perfectly alternating segmented imide siloxane copolymers were found to be principally dependent on the amount of poly (dimethyl siloxane) incorporated in the copolymer and did not correlate with the poly (dimethyl siloxane) or polyimide block lengths. The stress-strain behavior of both solvent cast films or molded films is also reported. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: The synthesis of high glass transition temperature (Tg 〉 300°C), amorphous, soluble, poly-imide oligomers of controlled molecular weight endcapped with 4-phenylethynylphthalic anhydride endcapping agent is described. The 4-phenylethynylphthalic anhydride was employed to afford a higher curing temperature (380-420°C) which widens the processing window compared to unsubstituted acetylene-endcapped polyimides. The polyimides were synthesized via solution imidization techniques, using the ester-acid of various dianhydrides and aromatic diamines. A “ one-pot” procedure utilizing NMP as the solvent and o-dichlo-robenzene as the azeotroping agent reproducibly produced fully imidized, but yet soluble wholly aromatic polyimides. Thermally cured samples were prepared with gel contents of up to 98% that displayed good solvent resistance. Glass transition temperatures comparable to high molecular weight linear analogs were produced. These polyimides also show excellent thermal stability as judged by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Model phenylethynyl imide compounds were synthesized and used to follow and elucidate the nature of the products formed from the phenylethynyl curing by using high temperature magic-angle 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR). Preliminary results indicate that the cure reaction can be followed by MAS NMR. However, the nature of the products being formed during the curing process is difficult to determine by the solid-state MAS NMR alone. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data clearly show that the model system does indeed melt and displays a wide window before the strong cure exotherm is observed. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
