Notizen:
Summary This case was misdiagnosed for 11 days due to an atypical course. After vomiting the author had sudden excruciating pain in the lower left chest and epigastrium. A left hydropneumothorax followed 2 days later. Only 11 days after the event did a negative laparotomy and subsequent thoracotomy allow the correct diagnosis and treatment. The laceration of the esophagus was repaired and a transpleural drain was inserted. A small leak with mediastinal abscess, esophagopleural fistula and pneumonitis developed postoperatively and delayed recovery for 11 weeks.
