    Notes: Abstract Between June 1988 and May 1991 88 orthotopic liver transplants and 1 liver and pancreas transplant were performed at the Liver Transplantation Department of the Ospedale Maggiore of Milan. All the patients underwent mycological surveillance and received antifungal prophylaxis with oral amphotericin B (6000 mg/day) or oral or intravenous fluconazole (200 mg/day) from the time of their transplant. The incidence of Candida colonization was 67%. Fluconazole was superior to oral amphotericin B in the treatment of C. albicans colonization (99 vs 15), but less effective in the treatment of colonization by other Candida spp. (03 vs 33). Deep-seated candidiasis developed in 5 patients, caused by C. albicans in 4 cases and C. krusei in 1. C. albicans infection resolved rapidly with fluconazole in 2 subjects, with intravenous amphotericin B alone in 1, and with amphotericin B plus flucytosine in the other. On the contrary, C. krusei infection did not respond to treatment with amphotericin B combined with flucytosine. Aspergillosis was diagnosed in 11 patients, of whom 4 died from invasive aspergillosis, despite 15 and 26 days of amphotericin B treatment in 2. In another patient invasive aspergillosis, diagnosed a few hours before retransplantation, improved with liposomal amphotericin B, but this man died from cytomegalovirus infection one month later. Aspergillosis was eradicated by itraconazole in 4 other patients and by topical amphotericin B in 2 whose infection was localized to surgical wound.

    Notes: Abstract Data regarding 11,541 cases of school accidents (from kindergarten to senior high school) that required hospital attention for treatment were examined. The information was obtained from the records of the a ≪ School Medicine Service of the City of Milan ≫, and covered five school years (from 1980–81 to 1984–85). The surveyed population included over 160,000 subjects for each year. After computer processing, data regarding type of school, year, age of the victim, place of the accident and type of lesions were obtained. The frequency of accidents was highest (about 2%) among kindergarten pupils, while in senior high school the lowest frequency (less than 1 %) was accompanied by the greatest percentage of hospitalizations (about 6%). From our results it appears that most accidents occur in school gyms (around 50%), and that the percentage of sprains and fractures is also highest in this area. School gyms can therefore be considered as a primary target for any prevention activity.

    Notes: Abstract: Fusion-fission and fully energy-damped binary processes of the 35Cl+24Mg reaction were investigated using particle-particle coincidence techniques at a 35Cl bombarding energy of Elab≈ 8 MeV/nucleon. Inclusive data were also taken in order to determine the partial wave distribution of the fusion process. The fragment-fragment correlation data show that the majority of events arises from a binary-decay process with a relatively large multiplicity of secondary light-charged particles emitted by the two primary excited fragments in the exit channel. No evidence is observed for ternary-breakup processes, as expected from the systematics recently established for incident energies below 15 MeV/nucleon and for a large number of reactions. The binary-process results are compared with predictions of statistical-model calculations. The calculations were performed using the Hauser-Feshbach method, based on the available phase space at the scission point of the compound nucleus. This new method uses temperature-dependent level densities and its predictions are in good agreement with the presented experimental data, thus consistent with the fusion-fission origin of the binary fully-damped yields.
