    Notizen: The chiroptical properties of planar-chiral and helical molecules without stereogenic centres and with well-defined structure, strain, electronic properties and chirality are investigated by experimental and theoretical circular dichroism spectroscopy. We report on the synthetic and theoretical achievements made during the past 10 years in the field of rigid [2.2]metacyclophane propellers, as well as in the area of [n]para- and [n]metacyclophanes containing aliphatic parts like adamantane or unsaturated bridges. Results for carbo and hetero helicenes and helicene-related molecules like twisted phenanthrenes are presented. It is demonstrated how reliable theoretical calculations using configuration interaction and time-dependent methods in combination with density functional theory today are and how useful the interplay between theory and experiment stimulates the development of chiral molecules optimized for this purpose. Even for large molecules it is routinely possible to assign Cotton effects to electronic transitions, to evaluate chromophore contributions, to determine absolute configurations and conformational equilibria, and to discover intramolecular charge transfer effects.

    Notizen: In this paper we report on amide rotaxanes with tetrabenzoylglucose stoppers. When acetyl groups are used instead of benzoyl groups, merely a pseudo-rotaxane 5 is obtained. The circular dichroism measurements of the rotaxanes 6a and 6b differ significantly from that one of the free axle 7. Similarly, the Cotton effects of the mixtures of achiral wheels 2a and 2b and chiral axle indicate intermolecular host-guest interactions, likewise. After an addition of a solution of NaOMe the wheel is slipping off immediately and quantitatively by hydrolysis, as the benzoylglucose stoppers decrease in size by hydrolysis.

    Notizen: The synthesis of the amide-based rotaxane 7a bearing calix[4]arene blocking groups is described for the first time. While rotaxane formation fails if a calix[4]arene is functionalized at the upper rim with only an amino or methylamino group lacking any spacer, the prolonged amine 5a works successfully as stopper unit preventing dethreading of the dimeric wheel 1a by its size. Rotaxane formation of 8b was observed only by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry of the reaction mixture of the amine 5b, the axle 6 and 1a. With the larger trimeric wheel 1b no stable rotaxane could be obtained. It either does not act as a concave template or its opening is too wide, even for the bulky calixarene stoppers.

    Notizen: The first synthesis of amide-linked rotaxanes with non-arene axle building blocks is reported. The threading synthesis of rotaxane 8 with olefinic fumaryl chloride proves that arene moieties are not necessary for non-ionic template syntheses. Mass spectroscopic evidence of a rotaxane bearing an aliphatic axle, derived from succinic acid, revealed that hydrogen bonding, rather than π,π interactions, is the predominant template binding force. 1H-NMR titration studies on the threading synthesis of these mechanically bonded molecules were carried out. The association constants measured suggest that the incorporation of the corresponding monoamide monochloride (cf. 7), rather than the incorporation of the diacid dichloride (cf. 5), plays the key role in these rotaxane syntheses. The X-ray structural analysis of a semi axle (14) reveals hydrogen bonding patterns characteristic of diamides.

    Notizen: Tricarbonylchromium Complexes of Chiral [2.2]Metacyclophanes: Syntheses, Structures, and Chiroptical PropertiesHPLC-baseline separations of three racemic cyclophanes 3, 4, and 6 on cellulose tris(3,5-dimethylphenyl)carbamate led to their enantiomers with high optical purity. Complexation of (-)-3 and (+)-3 with triamminetricarbonylchromium yielded chiral Cr(CO)3 complexes (-)-(S)P-(3S)M-3a and (+)-(R)P-(3R)M-3a stereoselectively. Derivatisation of the complexes by lithiation and reaction with electrophiles gave new substituted chiral Cr(CO)3 complexes of [2.2]metacyclophanes regio-selectively. X-ray structure analyses of one chiral chromium complex (-)-(R)P-(5S)M-14a and three chiral chromium-free ligands (-)-(S)P-3, (-)-(S)P-4, and (-)-(S)P-6 led to the assignment of the absolute configurations of all chiral compounds discussed here. The influences of substituents on the chiroptical properties are investigated. The helicity of [2.2]metacyclophanes is discussed. For the first time X-ray structure analyses were performed of a bis-Cr(CO)3 complex (9a) as well as of the first chromium complex 10a of a heteraphane. Dethioketalisation of (-)-(S)P-3 with NBS gave (-)-(S)P-18, the absolute chirality of which has been known, under retention of configuration.

They are obtained by cyclization of 1,3-propanedithiol (2), or of the thiaza precursors 5a, b, with the bis(bromomethyl) compounds 1, 4a, b. The dynamic behaviour of the aliphatic chains in 3c, and 6a, b (flipping/rotation) have been studied by dynamic NMR. X-ray analyses of 3c and 6a document the out-of-plane deformation of the boat-shaped benzene ring. The circular dichroism of enantiomer-enriched 3c is reported.

    Notizen: Pentacarbonyl(4-[2.2]metacyclophanyl(methoxy)carbene)-chromium(0) (6) was prepared according to the Fischer route from 4-bromo[2.2]metacyclophane. Aminolysis with non-chiral and chiral amines affords aminocarbene complexes 7-12. X-Ray structure analyses for 6 and its aminocarbene analogs 7 and 8 indicate that the incorporation of the chromium-carbene fragment has no significant influence on the deformation of the [2.2]metacyclophane skeleton.

    Notizen: Although the principle of template synthesis has been known since the sixties, surprising discoveries and new applications in the field of supramolecular chemistry over the last decade have provoked a boom in the subject. The synthesis of supramolecular species has been made much more efficient, or even in some cases possible, by the introduction of template ions or molecules. It is not just metal ions that can act as templates. Neutral molecules, electrostatic interactions, and hydrogen bonds also support the formation of binary and tertiary complexes. Energetically favorable conformations then lead to the formation of a specific desired product in high yield. In addition to the discussion of metal ions and neutral molecules as templates, covalent, positive, and negative templates are differentiated. Kinetic and thermodynamic aspects will also be considered in this review, together with the influence of templates on the phenomenon of self-organization. Further developments and applications include the synthesis of oligonucleotides, peptide blocks capable of forming secondary structure, and template polymers. Template synthesis of defined molecular cavities ultimately leads to “inclusion chemistry on a nanometer scale.”

    Notizen: After Sauvage et al. and Stoddart et al. had developed the now commonly used and well-established catenane and rotaxane synthesis utilizing phenanthroline/Cu+ and bipyridinium/crown units, a new way to synthesize mechanical bonds was discovered in 1992 - the synthesis of amide-linked catenanes and rotaxanes around a neutral template. The formation of the template, which leads to the host-guest bond, does not proceed by covalent or ionic interaction, but by weak supramolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonding, π-stacking, π-donor-π-acceptor interaction, and steric complementarity. The simple synthetic units (arene dicarboxylic acid dichlorides and diamines) can be varied in an astonishing number of ways, few steps are required to obtain the target molecules, and the yields of these syntheses approach those of ordinary organic syntheses. After the preparation of [2]catenanes, it took only a few years to prepare [2]-, [3]-, and bis[2]-rotaxanes of the amide type. The introduction of sulfonamide groups enabled alkylation of the sulfonamide nitrogen atom, and this made chemical reactions with catenanes and rotaxanes feasible. Intra- and intermolecular connections of catenanes and rotaxanes were then possible, and a molecule with the topology of a “pretzel” has recently been prepared. This allowed new insights into the molecular recognition processes of neutral guest and host substances, as well as further understanding of these processes in template synthesis, isomerism in catenanes, and the regioselectivity of the formation of catenane isomers. Competitive binding studies of guest molecules in the cavity of concave receptors with more than one binding site can be perfomed. These studies might result in higher synthetic yields of molecules with mechanical bonds and lead to further progress in the development of supramolecular nanostructures and molecular switches.
