    Notizen: Abstract Quantitative ultrasonic tissue characterisation of the myocardium based on integrated backscatter (IB) has the potential of becoming an effective method for detecting and evaluating myocardial ischaemia. To facilitate IB-based clinical applications, a new imaging method has been developed that combines the anatomical information of a B-mode image with the contractile performance of a selected myocardial region. To produce such a fusion image, a region of interest (ROI) in a B-mode cardiac image was first selected by the user. Algorithms for detection of the endocardium andepicardium were developed, and the resulting mean distance between the computer-detected curve and the manually traced curve was 0.83 mm for the endocardium and 0.58 mm for the epicardium. The cyclic variation of IB (CVIB) of each myocardial tissue element within the ROI was then calculated over one cardiac cycle. Finally, a grey-scale B-mode image at the end of diastole was displayed as a still image, and the pixels representing the myocardial tissue in the ROI colour-coded according to the corresponding CVIB over the past heart cycle. Both the B-mode image and the colour-coded region were refreshed (up-dated) at the next end-of-diastole. Preliminary results from normal (CVIB=10–12dB) and ischaemic (CVIB=5–7 dB) canine hearts are presented that demonstrate the utility of this new imaging method.

    Notizen: Separation of acetic acid/water mixtures by pervaporation was attempted by silicone rubbercoated polyetherimide membranes. In particular, the effect of the pore size of the polyetherimide membrane and the condition of silicone rubber coating on the performance of the composite membrane was investigated. It was found that the composite membrane could become either water selective or acetic acid selective, depending on the pore size of the support membrane and the condition of the silicone rubber coating. Thus, the overall performance of the composite membrane can be governed, either by the top coated layer or by the bottom support layer.

    Notizen: The crystallization and polymerization behavior of a crystalline LaRC-TPI powder at elevated temperatures have been studied. The characterization methods include differential scanning calorimetry and the measurements of inherent viscosity, ηinh, and viscoelastic properties of the fully imidized samples. The as-Received material possesses an initial crystal melting peak temperature of 272°C. For the material annealed at temperatures below 320°C, a semicrystalline polymer can be obtained. On the other hand, a purely amorphous structure is realized in the samples annealed at temperatures above 320°C. Isothermal crystallization kinetics are studied by means of the simple. Avrami equation. The likely nucleation path is attributed as an intermolecular oligomer nucleation type. The isothermal polymerization behavior is quantified by inherent viscosity measurements. A single cure is found to correlate values of Tg and ηinh for samples experiencing different thermal histories. Fully imidized amorphous and semicrystalline LaRC-TPI samples are successfully molded based on the information obtained from thermal analyses. The viscoelastic properties of these samples are also reported.
