Notes: Abstract In Italy, new agroforestry cultural models could play an important role in the diffusion of plantation forestry timber species. We studied the stem growth rates and leaf water potentials (Ψ) of common walnut (Juglans regia L.), and gravimetric soil moisture (θDW) depletion during the third and fourth growing seasons in an agroforestry trial in central Italy. Since the establishment of experimental plots in 1992, walnut was intercropped with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), with or without polyethylene (PE) mulching along tree rows. By the end of the study period, the unmulched-intercropped walnut was almost 68% smaller in stem diameter and height than the sole-unmulched control, demonstrating walnut’s sensitivity to alfalfa competition. The competitive effect of alfalfa on walnut stem growth was effectively controlled/reduced by PE mulching. Stem growth rates of mulched-intercropped walnut were always lower than the control, but much higher (ca. 235% in stem diameter and height) than those of unmulched-intercropped walnut. The higher field performance of mulched-intercropped walnut compared to the un- mulched-intercropped treatment was associated with higher soil moisture and predawn and midday Ψ values during the summer’s driest periods. The presence of PE mulching was also associated with lower levels of soil moisture during the early and late growing season, but this did not negatively affect walnut Ψ and growth rates. These results suggest that in the climatic conditions of central Italy, competition for soil moisture between young common walnut trees and alfalfa can be substantially lowered, but not completely eliminated, by PE mulching.

Notes: Abstract Low-lying energy levels in124Ba have been investigated from124Laβ-decay by using He-jet technique. Spin and parity assignments have been deduced from internal conversion electron measurements. Aβ-vibrational band based on a second 0+ state has been identified. Experimental level energies have been compared with IBFA-2 calculations.

Notes: Abstract The219Ra levels, fed by the α-decay of223Th, have been studied by anα−γ coincidence experiment. AK=1/2+ band, based on the 7/2+ ground state, with a large decoupling parameter a=−5.5 is proposed. Three levels with spins 5/2, 9/2, 7/2 and lowα-hindrance factors around 140 keV, can be considered as members of aK=5/2+ band, perturbed by the Coriolis coupling of configurations arising from theg9/2 shell. TheseK =1/2+ and 5/2+ orbitals are expected forN=131 in the reflection asymmetry model with ɛ2≃ɛ3−0.1. How-ever no evidence was found for the corresponding negative parity bands in this transitional nucleus.

Notes: Abstract From new measurements, a half-live of 4.2±0.3 s has been clearly established in127Pr. This value confirms our first result [4] and rules out other data [5]. The127Pr activity was produced by bombarding92Mo or94Mo targets with 210 MeV40Ca beams. The mass identification has been made using an ion-guide coupled with an on-line isotope separator. The partial level scheme proposed for127Ce has been deduced from β-gated γ spectra and Xγ- and γγ-coincidences. A new band structure based on a 1/2+ state is established.

Notes: Abstract The lowlying level scheme of the oddodd nucleus132Pr has been investigated for the first time. The radioactive nuclei were produced by bombarding96Mo targets with 225 MeV40Ca beam. Levels have been populated from the132Nd β- decay. A new value of its halflife has been measured: T1/2=88±7 s. The mass identification has been made with an ionguide coupled with an online isotope separator. γ- γ- t, X-γ-t and e−-γ-t coincidence measurements have been performed. The observed distribution of the level feedings is similar to that of the neighbouring odd-odd nuclei.

Notes: Abstract The results of measurements of the gamma-ray and conversion-electron singles and coincidence spectra from the decay of the 122 s121m Cs and the 155 s121g Cs to levels of121Xe are reported. TheM 3 multipolarity of the 68.5 keV isomeric transition in121Cs has been deduced. Numerous low-lying levels below 1.6 MeV excitation energy are found. A negative-parity level at 355.9 keV is observed for the first time. The results supplement the low lying energy level systematics in odd-A xenons. A comparison is made with theN=67 barium isotone.

    Notes: Abstract: The decay of the T 1/2 = 420 ns isomer in 151Er has been reinvestigated. The multipolarities of the decaying transitions have been established by measuring the electron conversion coefficients. An I = 67/2- assignment is proposed for this isomer with a π[h 4 11/2 d 1 3/2 d -1 5/2] ⊗ν[f 7/2 h 9/2 h -1 11/2] configuration.

Notes: Abstract Combined production of timber and forage species is considered to be a desirable land-use system to offset some of the current land management problems of Italy. This paper reports the early results of a study on intercropping young plants of walnut with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), with or without polyethylene mulching, in an experimental plantation in central Italy. Two genotypes of walnut were used:Juglans regia L. and the French hybrid NG23×RA. The seasonal changes of absolute and relative growth rates of walnut stem diameter and apical shoot length were investigated. During both growing seasons, alfalfa intercropping strongly decreased walnut growth, whereas polyethylene mulching promoted stem height and diameter growth. Stem growth of intercropped-and-mulched walnut was the same as that of sole walnut under clean cultivation management. The use of polyethylene mulching reduced or avoided the competitive effect of associated alfalfa on walnut growth. During both growing seasons, the intercropped-and-mulched walnut had higher relative growth rates than intercropped-unmulched walnut. The results show the effectiveness of polyethylene mulching in promoting early growth of walnut, even when intercropped with alfalfa during early stages of plantation establishment.

Notes: Abstract The decay of124Ba to the levels of odd-odd124Cs has been studied with on-line mass-separated sources delivered at the Isocele facility. The energy level scheme has been established fromγ-ray singles,γ−γ−t coincidence ande−γ−t coincidence spectra. Spin and parity of several low-lying levels have been assigned on the basis of internal conversion coefficient measurements andβ-branchings. A completely new level pattern including approximately 50 levels and 180γ-rays is proposed for124Cs. Several features of this level scheme are discussed and compared to those of neighbouring isotopes.
