    Notizen: Summary Specialized blood cells of many tunicates accumulate high concentrations of vanadium and phenolic peptide pigments called tunichromes (TC). In order to determine whether V and TC reside in the same cells,Ascidia nigra andAscidia ceratodes blood cell subpopulations were isolated by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (flow cytometry) and chemically analyzed. V was found in the spherical, gree/grey signet ring cells, and to a lesser degree in the mulberry-shaped, yellow/ green morula cells (MRs), whereas free TC was detected mainly in MRs.

    Notizen: Abstract Ascidia ceratodes exposed to14C-phenylalanine in the surrounding seawater incorporates the radiolabel into newly biosynthesized tunichrome molecules. Radioactivity can be detected in tunichrome extracted from circulating blood cells within one day following initial exposure to the radiolabel; weak activity (≤4 μCi/mol tunichrome=22 nmol phenylalanine/mol tunichrome) is detected in 1 to 10 days; significantly higher amounts of radiolabel (57 μCi/mol tunichrome=318 nmol phenylalanine/mol tunichrome) appear 20 days after seawater exposure. Therefore, phenylalanine can function as a precursor in the biosynthesis of tunichrome.

    Notizen: Abstract Silica gels retaining double pore structure in the size ranges of micrometer and nanometer have been applied to the rod-shaped monolithic column for liquid chromatography. The macropore structure was designed by controlling the phase separation process induced by the hydrolysis and polycondensation of alkoxysilane, whereas the mesopore structure was tailored by the solvent exchange treatments on wet gels. The size exclusion chromatograms on polystyrene standards exhibited almost similar features for octadecyl-modified rod and conventional packed beads columns. The dependence of plate height on the velocity of mobile phase determined for amylbenzene was by far weaker in the rod column than in the packed beads column, suggesting that additional geometrical factors should be considered in describing the separation mechanism in the rod column.
