Notizen: Abstract. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a variant of histiocytosis, is characterized by an uncontrolled activation of the cellular immune system, including hepatic mononuclear phagocytic cells. Abdominal ultrasound findings in children are evaluated in this disease. We present six pediatric cases, two with familial and four with sporadic hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, examined by abdominal sonography. Three signs were frequently observed: thickening of the gallbladder wall (all cases), increased periportal echogenicity (four cases), and enlarged lymph nodes in the porta hepatis (four cases). Hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, and ascitic fluid may also be found. These imaging findings are not specific and may be seen in viral hepatitis. However, once hepatitis is excluded, they may suggest the diagnosis of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in a critically ill child. A bone smear must be done to establish the diagnosis.

Notizen: Abstract: The photoassociative spectroscopy of the Cs2 0 g - long-range molecular state dissociating into the asymptote is performed, using cold cesium atoms in a vapor-cell magneto-optical trap (MOT). Vibrational levels from v =0 to v =132 are identified, and their rotational structure is well resolved up J =8 for levels below v =74. These data are analyzed in terms of the Rydberg-Klein-Rees (RKR) procedure, and correspond to 99.6% of an effective potential curve with a minimum at Å and a cm-1 depth. Both ab initio calculations and simple model estimations predict a double-well structure for this potential curve, which cannot be reproduced presently by the RKR approach but which is confirmed by the presence of giant structures in the spectrum. The 1u( )long-range state is also observed for the first time in Cs2.

Notizen: Abstract: We report on the formation of translationally cold Cs2 ground state molecules through photoassociation in the 1u attractive molecular state below the 6 s 1/2 +6 p 3/2 dissociation limit. The cold molecules are obtained after spontaneous decay of photoassociated molecules in a MOT and in a dark SPOT. We also used polarized atoms, in the f =3, m f =+3Zeeman ground state. Purely asymptotic and adiabatic calculations including hyperfine interaction and rotation are in excellent agreement with observed structures. As expected, the 1u state is actually a pure long-range state, consisting of paired atoms, uniquely linked by the first terms of the multipole expansion of the electrostatic interaction. A temperature of 20 K has been measured for the molecular cloud.

Notizen: Abstract. Over 100 high lying level energies of the lowest electronic states $X^1{\rm\Sigma}^ + _g$ and $a^3{\rm\Sigma}^ + _u$ in Cs2 are determined in a $\Lambda$ -like scheme two-colour photoassociation spectroscopy. The results are analyzed with a coupled channel model using an asymptotic approach, based on nodal lines. From this analysis we determine the long range dispersion coefficient C6 to 6846.2 $\pm$ 15.6 a.u. We also obtain the first experimental determination of the amplitude of the asymptotic exchange term.

Notizen: Abstract: Two-photon photoassociation spectra in a Λ-type excitation scheme are analysed under the systematically varied experimental conditions of frequency detunings and laser intensities. Line shape fits are presented as well as the investigation of intensity and detuning dependent line shifts. From both we determine the attained spectroscopic precision, that is corrected for a systematic line shift due to the thermal distribution of atoms in the trap. An energy correction for this effect is given. Information about the feasibility of generating translationally cold molecules in a well defined rotational and vibrational level by the photoassociation process is derived from the analysis.

Notizen: Abstract. Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a atomic cesium gas prepared in a “low field seeker” Zeeman sublevel and confined in a magnetic trap has been thwarted by a high cross-section of inelastic spin-flip collisions. A recent experiment [1] succeeded in reaching BEC for cesium atoms using all optical methods and tuning the scattering length. We will discuss a hybrid magnetic and optical trap for cesium atoms in the true hyperfine ground state, the “high field seeker” Zeeman sublevel, F = m F = 3. Although this trap allows only one-dimensional (1D) evaporative cooling, we show that a route towards BEC with such a trap should be possible. We present simulations of 1D evaporative cooling, which shows that a high phase space density (PSD) of 0.1 could be reached in less than 10 seconds.

Notizen: Abstract: We present the results of absorption measurements in a cesium vapor around 630 K, together with photoionization spectra through a resonance-enhanced two-photon absorption of ultracold cesium dimers created after photoassociation of ultracold cesium atoms. The maximum efficiency of the ultracold molecule ionization is found for wavelengths where absorption at thermal energies is the strongest, in agreement with our theoretical simulations of both processes, involving the so-called Cs2 diffuse bands. This result will be helpful for further optimization of such a direct way of detection of ultracold molecules.
