Notizen: Abstract Eight healthy subjects were exposed to three 1/3 octave-band vibrations (63, 200, and 500 Hz) by hand clasping a vibrated handle in a soundproof and thermoregulated room. The vibratory sensation threshold at 125 Hz was measured before and after the vibration exposure at an exposed fingertip. According to a preceding study, we first determined the relationship between the acceleration of the vibration and the temporary threshold shift of vibratory sensation immediately after the vibratory exposure (TTSv, 0) induced by 1/3 octave-band vibration. We then measured TTSv after the exposure to a composite vibration composed of two 1/3 octave-band vibrations that might induce an equal magnitude of TTSv, 0 on the basis of the above relationship. The TTSv, 0 induced by the composite vibration was not larger than the TTSv, 0 induced by the component vibrations. This result suggests that the component of the vibration inducing the largest TTSv, 0 determines the TTSv, 0 by broad-band random vibration.

Notizen: Summary The expression of laminin was analyzed in the human fetal inner ear using immunohistochemical methods. In the 11-week-old human fetus, the presence of laminin was found in the basement membrane of the immature cochlea, endolymphatic sac and vestibular end organs. The reaction of the basement membrane of the endolymphatic sac was strong in the 15-week-old human fetus. A laminin reaction was seen in the cochlea, Reissner's membrane, epithelial cells of the limbus spiralis, the basilar membrane and the stria vascularis. In particular, the capillaries and basement membrane of the stria vascularis were strongly positive. These results suggest that laminin may be an essential component in the development of the inner ear and may possibly be related to filtration of the endolymph.

Notizen: Abstract The expression of S-100 protein was analyzed in the human fetal inner ear using immunohistochemical methods. In the 11-week-old human fetus, the cochlea was almost negative for S-100 protein, whereas in the 14- and 15-week-old fetuses, the spiral ligament, Reissner's membrane and spiral limbus were positive for the protein. These results suggest that S-100 protein may be a reliable marker for determining functional maturation of the fetal cochlea and the inner ear. In the l l-, 14- and 15-week fetuses, the epithelial cells of the endolymphatic sac were labelled with S-100 protein. These findings demonstrate that the endolymphatic sac, spiral limbus and spiral ligament in the fetal inner ear have a high activity of S-100 protein, with this presence possibly related to fluid and ion transport of endolymph.
