Notizen: Field trials in two cropping seasons and two locations in central China were conducted on 60 Chinese autumn-sown wheat varieties to assess their partial resistance to powdery mildew. Mean levels of disease severity ranged from close to 0 to more than 90%. The method of inoculation and the location in which trials were conducted affected the relative performance of the varieties, but these effects were much smaller than the main effect of variety. The area under the disease progress curve was highly correlated with final disease severity, but both were poorly correlated with apparent infection rate. Disease severity was regressed against frequencies of virulence in the Blumeria graminis (syn. Erysiphe graminis) f sp. tritici populations in the trial plots. A vertical distance (D) from the mean mildew severity to the fitted line was calculated for each variety and was used to quantify partial resistance. Five of the 60 varieties, ‘Hx8541’, ‘E28547’, ‘Chuan1066’, ‘Zhe88pin6’ and ‘Lin5064’, consistently expressed relatively low levels of disease despite high frequencies of virulence in the pathogen and had consistently high D-values. They may therefore have good levels of partial resistance.

Notizen: Two field trials were conducted in the Philippines in successive years to compare the effectiveness of different pre- and post-harvest treatments on the development of anthracnose on mango fruits caused by Colletoirichum gloeosporioides. In one experiment, the pre-harvest application of benomyl (250 mg/l a.i.) significantly reduced the number of conidia sampled in tree canopies compared with control trees (no fungicide) and was associated with a significant reduction in the post-harvest development of anthracnose on fruits. A hot-benomyl dip (850 mg/l a.i. at 52 55 C for 10 min) completely eradicated anthracnose on fruit treated on the day of harvest. In a second experiment, pre-harvest applications of prochloraz (500 mg/l a.i.) either within a pre-planned spray schedule or applied strategically (when 18 h or more continual leaf wetness was recorded by a sensor placed within a tree canopy) gave the best control of anthracnose on fruits. A hot-benomyl dip was again the most effective post-harvest treatment for fruit treated on the day of harvest and on the day after. There was no significant difference, however, between hot-benomyl dips or prochloraz dips (500 mg/l a.i. for 10 min) at ambient temperatures when fruit were treated on the third day after harvest. The implications of these results for the production and treatment of Carabao mangoes in the Philippines are discussed.

Notizen: Cotton was grown in containers of soil with sclerotia of Phymatotrichum omnivorum. Plants were grown for 3 weeks in the greenhouse and then transferred to field plots. Foliar and stem symptoms of Phymatotrichum root rot occurred 15–50 days after field placement. Mean incubation periods (defined as time from field placement to symptoms) were about 24 days for placements made in June and July and about 35 days for placements made in August and September 1984. Colonization of roots was more advanced in the top 24 cm of soil. The time taken for symptoms to appear was not related to the amount of root colonization at the time plants were transferred to the field. In the later two planting dates a drop in soil water potential to approximately −25 bars after 20–24 days was associated with the delay in symptom expression. There were significant linear relationships between the length of the incubation period (days), or its inverse (day−1), and the independent variables: mean maximum daily temperature (°C) in the top 12 cm layer of soil, soil water potential in the 31–60 cm layer of soil and their product (representing the interaction of these two variables). In general, symptom expression was faster at higher temperatures and with wetter conditions. Newly-formed sclerotia were found most frequently in containers some 5–6 weeks after plant death when soil temperatures had decreased and soils were close to saturation (September and October).

Notizen: The morphology of powdery mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha) colonies of known age was studied on six apple cultivars inoculated in a glasshouse. Colonies were observed first on the older leaves. Mean disease incidence ranged from about 20% for cv. Laxton's Superb to about 45% for cv. Crispin. Conidiophore density (number of conidiophores/mm2 colony) was higher on younger than on older leaves, higher on the upper than on the lower leaf surface, and decreased with the age of the colony. The number of hyphal interceptions on a line transect was higher on the upper surface but the ratio of conidiophore density to hyphal interceptions was greater on the lower surface and did not differ with colony age or cultivar. The number of conidia/conidiophore was higher on the younger leaves and on the upper surfaces and was at a maximum 7-12 days after the first sign of the colony. The number of conidia/mm2 colony was higher on lower surfaces, especially of the younger leaves. There was generally an associated variation between cultivars in components of spore production.

Notizen: A technique for relating the progress of plant diseases caused by airborne fungal pathogens to cumulative numbers of trapped spores is proposed. The relationship involves two epidemiological parameters—a disease asymptote and the infection efficiency (disease units/spore) of inoculum. The technique was evaluated using data on apple powdery mildew and scab epidemics in sprayed and unsprayed apple orchard plots. For powdery mildew, the observed relationships were close to those proposed in the unsprayed plot, but changed after or during the period of fungicide application in sprayed plots. Parameter estimates gave useful comparative information on the epidemics. The technique was not useful for scab because of the discontinuous patterns of infection.

Notizen: Factors affecting the production of conidia of Peronosclerospora sorghi, causing sorghum downy mildew (SDM), were investigated during 1993 and 1994 in Zimbabwe. In the field conidia were detected on nights when the minimum temperature was in the range 10–19°C. On 73% of nights when conidia were detected rain had fallen within the previous 72 h and on 64% of nights wind speed was 〈 2.0 m s−1. The time period over which conidia were detected was 2–9 h. Using incubated leaf material, conidia were produced in the temperature range 10–26°C. Local lesions and systemically infected leaf material produced 2.4–5.7 × 103 conidia per cm2. Under controlled conditions conidia were released from conidiophores for 2.5 h after maturation and were shown to be well adapted to wind dispersal, having a settling velocity of 1.5 × 10−4 m s−1. Conditions that are suitable for conidia production occur in Zimbabwe and other semi-arid regions of southern Africa during the cropping season.

Notizen: In situ strand growth and sclerotium formation of Phymatotrichopsis omnivora were observed in minirhizotrons using a microvideo camera. Strand growth was greater in soils subject to decreasing levels of soil matric potential (high water stress) compared with a continuously wet treatment. Intermediate levels of water stress (−0.5 to −0.9 MPa) resulted in less strand growth than either the dry or wet treatments. In all treatments strand growth increased to a maximum within 10 days of inoculum placement in soil but then declined to approach an apparent steady-state value. The effects of soil matric potential on sclerotium formation were apparent when barley seeds were sown in the experimental units 3 weeks after the experiment had begun, permitting differential water cycling patterns to be obtained. Sclerotia were recovered in larger numbers from experimental units in which high water potentials (〉 −0.2 MPa) occurred 2 weeks prior to and following the death of host plants.

Notizen: Components of resistance of apple to Podosphaera leucotricha were assessed in the glasshouse by spraying shoot tips of cultivars with conidia. Disease incidence (proportion of leaf surfaces with mildew) and colony numbers were higher and incubation periods correspondingly shorter on the older leaves. unrolled at the time of inoculation. Numbers of colonies were higher on the lower surface. Spore production per colony was higher on the younger leaves. In general, a short incubation period on a cultivar was associated with a high disease incidence, many colonies and high spore production. For some cultivars the association between these components permitted resistance to be classified as very high (cv. Discovery), very low (cv. Golden Delicious), or intermediate(cvs Bramley's Seedling. Suntan). The effects of inoculum concentration and post-inoculation environment (glasshouse or outdoors) on components of resistance were assessed in a further study. No interactions between cultivar and inoculum concentration were detected. There was generally an associated variation in components between cultivars within an environment, but inconsistencies in cultivar rankings were noted between the two environments and the two studies. Mean incubation period was shorter and colony area larger in the glasshouse than outdoors. There were significant differences in conidia/cm2 colony between cultivars only in the glasshouse. Components conferring high resistance in cv. Discovery and low resistance in cv. Golden Delicious were confirmed in both environments and in both studies.

Notizen: Epidemics of apple powdery mildew were monitored on leaves of vegetative extension shoots in a mixed-cultivar orchard in 1979. 1980 and 1981. Cultivars Cox's Orange Pippin. Golden Delicious. Ida Red and Suntan were very susceptible but little mildew developed on cv. Discovery in any year. Results with cvs Crispin and Spartan were less consistent due, in part, to differing patterns of vegetative growth. The rankings of cultivars for disease incidence (proportion of leaves with mildew), number of colonies and mildewed area were similar, and were also consistent on fungicide-sprayed and unsprayed trees in 1981. Less disease occurred on fungicide-treated Golden Delicious than on Cox's Orange Pippin. Most infections occurred on the rolled leaves at the shoot tip. Spore production was greatest on leaves at positions -1 to -4 where leaf 0 was the youngest and leaf - 1 the adjacent and older unrolled leaf.
